Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikola Olic.
Nikola, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am a Serbian photographer living and working in Dallas, Texas, focusing on architectural photography and abstract structural quotes that reimagine their subjects in playful, dimensionless and disorienting ways.
Each photograph in my collection is accompanied with the exact coordinates where it was taken, and a short description, offering a direct connection between the unexpected visual space of the photograph, and the real world of cars, buildings, people and noise in which it exists.
This is intended as a demystifying tool essential to abstract photography, reminding that these subjects — beautiful or otherwise — are on every corner, in places we visit and places we live in.
My photography is on view and available for purchase through AfterImage Gallery in uptown, and has appeared in various galleries, art events, museums, magazines, newspapers, spaces and websites around the world, including Wired, The Guardian, CNN, Yahoo.com, and Dwell, locally at the MADI Museum in uptown, The Dallas Observer, The Statler Hotel, Dallas Museum Of Art and Fair Park.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road is long and windy, but just like any good road trip, you want that because you want to be there on it. Perhaps more so then in pragmatic concrete non-art spaces, success and failure are more tightly integrated and sometimes hard to tell apart, a temporary success can be a dead-end down the road, and a failure can adjust course and open up new and exciting opportunities. If you love what you do, success and failure dont really matter much, and the road you are on doesn’t beg to be categorized.
Please tell us about Structure Photography.
I am an abstract structural and architectural photographer based right here in Dallas. I love my city and the people and visual opportunities in it and love exploring it. The same extends to the rest of Texas, the United States and the rest of our planet.
My photographs are available at AfterImage Gallery in Uptown, one of the oldest photography-specific art galleries in the world, and certainly in the United States. I am known for adapting known visuals and known spaces into new forms, using architecture and public accessible structures to put together new visuals and in essence paint with architecture.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
All of my childhood is a great memory, a continuous streak all the way up to now and this very talk! 🙂
