Today we’d like to introduce you to Mady Fischelli.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was just a freshman sitting in my first photography class, really only there because I needed fine arts credit. It’s funny how going into that class, I had no idea it would turn into a passion and a career. I quickly became mesmerized by the art of a photograph, and how many memories and stories it can hold. It helped me appreciate the beauty of this world and made me realize how lucky I am to capture it.
I developed an enthusiasm for learning. I wanted to get my hands on any opportunity that came up. I took more photography classes and used YouTube videos as a way to teach myself. I had wonderful teachers and mentors that saw the potential in me and invested their time, and I couldn’t be more grateful for that. I did countless shoots to build my portfolio and expand my experience.
My parents were and still are my biggest influencers to this day. The summer before my senior year, they saw how much I had grown over the past few years in my photography and suggested I make a business out of it. Honestly, the idea of a business sounded intimidating at first. But, if you want to get somewhere in life, you have to do the things that scare you. So, I made a website, advertised on social media, and made connections with people. Pretty soon, I had photography jobs lined up through the year.
That fall semester of my senior year, I decided to attend Dallas Baptist University to further my photography through a degree in Graphic Design. I just finished my freshman year there and it was honestly the best year of my life. I learned so much about my capabilities and just how far I can stretch myself to become the best artist I can be. 2018 has been filling up with wonderful opportunities and I can’t wait to see how they unfold.
Being a photographer is a unique job. Not only do you get to be your own boss, but you get to be as creative and adventurous as you push yourself to be. No one will ever have the same exact perspective as you and that is what makes each individual artist special.
In the past five years that I have been a photographer, I have learned that your own time and energy given to your work will get you somewhere, but nothing will bring you more blessings and opportunities than when you’re walking in step with Jesus Christ. I honestly can’t imagine going through this journey without Him and I can’t wait to see where He takes me.
Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t always been easy. From dealing with difficult clients or arriving at a shoot only to realize I left my memory card at home, or even going through phases where I’m stuck in a rut with no inspiration and no desire to create anything. It happens. And it took me a while to realize it’s okay when things like that happen. I started viewing setbacks as a blessing and learning from them as I go.
The biggest thing I have struggled with though is a fear of failure. All throughout my photography experience, I’d say that is the one thing that has ever held me back. I used to, and sometimes still do, get so anxious before photo shoots all because I have a fear that I’ll let my client down, that the photos won’t turn out, and ultimately, the fear that I’m simply not good enough. But doubting yourself is a dangerous game to play. Be confident.
I’ve trained myself, in those nervous moments, to shut down negative thoughts about myself and my abilities. I tell myself that my fears are not even close to as big as the God I serve. Since I got in that habit, it’s taken a weight off my shoulders and I’m able to shoot with ease and confidence!
We’d love to hear more about your business.
This business means so much to me. I remember when I first started it, I wanted it to represent something simple, genuine, and light-hearted. I’d say so far it has encapsulated that well. I started out doing senior portraits and family pictures in high school (which I still love to do!), but I have expanded this past year into more engagements, weddings and travel/lifestyle. I have also picked up videography over the past year, and can’t wait to see how that develops.
I have always sent my edited pictures to clients within a few days, sometimes overnight, after the day of the shoot. I know the feeling of waiting weeks and weeks to get your pictures back, and never want to put people through that long anticipation. I love sending them soon after the shoot, and hearing how excited they were to receive them so early, which I’d say is something that sets me apart from most photography companies.
Representing the raw version of a person and capturing the real, natural moments has always been a big deal for me. I strive to make sure my clients feel free to be themselves. I’m a big people person. I love connecting with people and making them feel special, which I’d say is the main goal of my company. It’s a privilege to be a small part of someone’s journey, so when I work with people, I am all about them and making sure they feel loved.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I’d say the DFW area is a fantastic place to have a business, whether you are just starting out or have been in the business for 20 years. The area is growing rapidly and you’d be surprised how eager people are to try new things and support businesses. I know of many small businesses around Dallas that became very successful all because of word of mouth and great advertising. If you supply a wonderful experience, word will travel fast and your business will grow with new customers and opportunities.
