Meet Megan Smith of In the Air Balloons in Lake Highlands

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Smith.

Megan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always had a resistance to doing just one thing with my life. There’s just so many interesting things out there! My experiences as a teacher in Austin, a barista in the Pacific Northwest, a digital art director, a co-host of Dallas Creative Mornings, and becoming a mother – all led me to… balloons! In all my positions, I found a passion for celebrating the people around me. In the Air provides an opportunity to spread joy, making people feel recognized and appreciated. What more could I ask for?

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Running a business is a fun challenge. I’m consistently learning: from bookkeeping and taxes to engineering armatures and event planning logistics. I am not bored – and I’m so grateful for that!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the In the Air Balloons story. Tell us more about the business.
What really sets In the Air apart is our collaborative process. We’ll work together to come up with designs to fit the location and scale of the party or event. Everyone knows balloons can be silly and fun, but they can also be sophisticated and modern. It’s all about bringing the vision to life. From birthday bouquets and intimate backyard parties to weddings and large corporate events – I’m happy to work with you to make it special.

On top of that, party and event planning is inherently stressful. I am really gratified to see how becoming a partner in the party preparations removes some of the pressure. My clients feel like friends, we’re in this together to make it a success!

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Psychologists say that people who consider themselves lucky, often have good luck. That has always stuck with me and shaped my perspective.

My experience in the creative world has taught me to seek feedback and critiques. Nothing is of greater value than learning what you are doing wrong or what you can improve. With that perspective, failures are necessary steps of growth. Can you imagine anything worse than never getting better? Perhaps repeating the same mistake for years? Being stagnant? While success is fun, the best luck is having the opportunity to expand your abilities!
