Today we’d like to introduce you to Jency Thomas.
Jency, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Ever since I was young girl, growing up in India, I enjoyed wearing sarees, styling my hair and doing my makeup. A saree, to someone who is not familiar with this beautiful Indian fabric, is just nine yards of cloth. But to me it is this wondrous garment, which can make a woman look beautiful when draped perfectly. When I was in high school, I would help friends and family with draping sarees. I loved draping sarees in unique, stylish ways to help my friends look their best for parties and family gatherings. I loved to accentuate their best features and downplay any figure flaws when I draped their sarees. Sarees have a way of making all women look good, no matter what their size. My passions not only include saree draping, but also hair and makeup. I just love to make people look and feel beautiful.
I started doing saree drapings for weddings, engagements, and parties. By word of mouth, I started getting calls and appointments for my saree draping services. I used to travel to the client’s venue and meet for initial saree draping. In 2016, I started my own business, which has now grown largely from personal referrals. Since most events take place on the weekends, I am pretty much booked every weekend, especially during the wedding season and the during holidays. My hobby has now become my business, and nothing else could have made me happier.
Has it been a smooth road?
Like it is for most people who have started their own businesses, this road is paved with a few hurdles and challenges. I too, have had some struggles along the way. Starting your own business is very daunting and for me, the first step was getting my name out there. Also, navigating being a wife, mother, and having a full-time job took time. It takes a lot of work-life balance and sacrifices to make any personal business a success. Juggling many different responsibilities and efforts to make everyone, most importantly your clients, happy, is an ongoing part of running a business. The long hours and sacrifice are worth it when you see the end result: a radiantly beautiful bride and a fabulous bridal party. Now, I feel like I am in a place where my passion has merged beautifully into my business, and my dream has finally come true.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I meet with clients who contact me for my saree draping and makeup services for events. I travel to the client’s venue and meet for initial saree draping and makeup trial. I will meet with the client and listen to how she would like to look for the special event and then will tailor the saree draping to reflect her unique style and look. I specialize in using distinctive and different techniques to drape the fabric to accentuate the client’s features. I drape sarees and do makeup for wedding parties, engagement parties, holiday parties, and photo sessions. I also travel to the clients home or event venue to provide services.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I feel that Dallas is a great place to start a business. The large metroplex is growing and there is so much diversity for fashion and appreciation for elegant party looks. I highly recommend the Dallas Fort Worth area to entrepreneurs. The future growth and outlook for businesses to flourish in Dallas are tremendous.
