Meet Monica Woods of Moni Lynn Images in Roanoke

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Woods.

Monica, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
After completing my undergrad degree, I found myself needing to feel my time with something. I was used to juggling my time between motherhood, a full-time job, and school. I found myself picking up a camera and immediately fell in love. Although I participated in band and orchestra, I never imaged myself becoming a photographer.

My perfectionist side took over and I registered for classes, webinars, and workshops. I used all of my spare time to learn as much as I could since this was new for me. Luckily, I was introduced to a wonderful photographer in the Fort Worth area that was willing to share his knowledge with me. I also joined local photographer groups and took in as much information as my brain could stand and continued to practice my craft.

Has it been a smooth road?
I still work a full-time day job and I am working on my MBA (two classes left!). There are times when I struggle to balance my time between everything I do. My class load is lighter now, so I am sure this will change soon.

The other thing I struggled with when I first started out was sharing my work with others. Accepting criticism can be hard but it is what makes us better as artist. I am grateful for the photographers in my area who encouraged me to share and gave me real insight on how to improve my work.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Moni Lynn Images story. Tell us more about the business.
I absolutely love couples wanted to showcase the intimacy they share. I am not posing photographer and ask my couples to just be natural, so I can capture their essence.

I also saw women in the community who lost confidence in themselves and I wanted to help them find the love they once had for themselves. This inspired me to start the EmbraceShe segment of my photography business. Through boudoir photography, I want to empower women to feel confident at whatever stage of life they are in. My goal is to motivate women to be happy now and not wait until society says it is okay.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Photography has been a male dominated profession for many years. I see this shifting as more and more females purse this career. I also believe videography becoming almost synonymous with photography in the future as we become a more social media-driven society.
