Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Kwon Zutter.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My love for teaching actually started in a classroom in NYC. I taught biology and environmental science at a public high school and my passion for connecting with unique individuals through knowledge and learning truly blossomed during my teaching career. After a couple of years, I left the school system to work for lululemon athletica – a phenomenal company whose goal is to impact their local communities through retail, fitness and wellness and during my time there, I experienced firsthand the undeniable connection between physical and mental wellness. Once my husband’s career moved us to Dallas, I knew that my calling was to take my teaching experience into the fitness arena and to work hard at helping people change their bodies and minds. The next couple of years, I focused on growing and learning as much as I could and I even I served as a consultant for dozens of fitness start-ups domestically and internationally. It had always been a big, scary goal of mine to create a brand and studio in my own vision, and I knew it was finally time to take the jump.
Has it been a smooth road?
Smooth is such a subjective word and hindsight is always 20/20. Looking back, I guess I could say that everything happened the way it did for a reason, but it certainly did not feel like timing was on my side for opening this business. After battling infertility for close to 4 years, my husband and I were finally blessed with a healthy pregnancy to find that the studio would open within a couple of days of the baby’s birth. It was really tough and truly took a village to get through the first couple of months of new motherhood and new start-up life, but I feel powerful and resilient for having had that experience.
My advice for women who are pursuing big things in their careers? Stop seeking balance. The quest to achieve balance is eternal and unattainable if you’re a driven individual. I once read that it isn’t “balance” we should be chasing, it’s PRESENCE. When I’m home with my husband and son, I strive to be PRESENT so I can best wife and mom I can be and when I walk through the doors of my studio, I am PRESENT to the needs of my staff and clients so I can be the best instructor and leader I can be. It’s impossible to wear all of your hats and play each role perfectly all the time. You have be willing to mess up a lot. And be okay with it.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Class Studios story. Tell us more about the business.
Class Studios is located in the West Village in Dallas and we offer two body-changing, mind-shifting workouts. In our Cycle studio, we clip in with our riders to 45 minutes of powerful music and motivation. In our Train studio, we row, lift weights and challenge our bodies through plyometrics and suspension training. Having both workouts under one roof and one membership gives our clients the ability to find a well-rounded and balanced workout regimen they can commit to week after week. The results I’ve seen in our clients in just the first couple of months is mind-blowing.
When I opened Class Studios, I wanted to offer a place open to everyone in our community to become stronger together – hence the name. In a class – we surround ourselves with people that come from all different walks of life, but are there with a simple, unified purpose: to grow and develop as individuals. I am most proud that we take that mission seriously and that my staff leads by example. The unbreakable bond amongst my instructors and staff is unlike anything I’ve seen or been a part of. It’s rare and special to create that organically and I’m so happy we have created that culture on our team. I think that love and sincere passion for community can be felt when you walk through our doors.
For good reason, society often focuses more on the problems rather than the opportunities that exist, because the problems need to be solved. However, we’d probably also benefit from looking for and recognizing the opportunities that women are better positioned to capitalize on. Have you discovered such opportunities?
Simple. Ask for what you need. It’s easy to take on all of the burden on your own, but that isn’t sustainable and you sacrifice a lot of happiness by doing that. Whether you need support and advice from other people in your field, friends and family to help you financially, or your partner to take some things on at home to make your plate less full – you’d be surprised what others are willing to do for you if you just ask.
