Today we’d like to introduce you to Ramona Freeman.
Ramona, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started creating art with the love and support of my mom. She always carried pens and paper in her purse. She would provide my brothers and I with materials and time to be creative, use our imaginations and express our thoughts and feelings. She was a teacher, so it was natural for me to become an art educator… combining my love for children and art. With the encouragement from my family and students, I slowly decided to show my art to the public. I have found my voice through art. It is an honor to share my artworks with others.
Has it been a smooth road?
My greatest obstacles and challenges come from myself. I constantly remind myself to be brave, to take a chance and to voice my thoughts. There will always be challenges in life… but the lesson to be learned is how one deals with the challenge… to persevere in a positive manner towards one’s goals and passions.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
When producing a piece of art I try not to restrict my subject matter or art materials. I enjoy using all materials, pencil, paint, ceramic and fiber. Some people like my high-value cubist style paintings. While looking at a painting of cubist animals moving across the canvas, they may be interrupted by a surprising shape of something new… like watching the clouds change shape from one moment to the next. Others enjoy my ceramic bowls, like the diversity in the world each bowl is unique, different and special.
I sell my artwork in Athens (211 Gallery, The Frame House), Tyler (Gold Leaf), Longview (P’s Gallery), Ben Wheeler (The Forge, Mr.B’s), on Facebook (Ramona Freeman) and Storenvy (RFreemanArt). I enjoy entering art shows and exhibitions both locally and nationally.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I think the Dallas area is a wonderful place for a business like mine.
Growing Up
I spent my childhood all over Texas. I’ve lived in the cotton fields of Corsicana, near the salt air of Edinburg, from the piney woods of Texarkana to the big city of Dallas. Being raised by a single mom we moved often. Mom always took us (my brothers Mark and Cody) on adventures. One summer mom enrolled us all in a town play. Being a quiet/shy person I did not have the starring role… but what a hoot. I vowed that with each move and new school I would become braver and less shy. I’m still a bit shy in crowds but I think my art speaks loudly and with confidence. Now, I live with my husband Don Hollis (also an artist) on the lake with the pet pigeons, dog Marco and the beauty of nature.
