Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Acosta.
Monica, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
My creative path began with photography. I was highly involved in photography throughout High School practicing both traditional and digital photography. My first major in college was photography, but I quickly lost the gratification I got from it when I was just doing it for fun verses for grades.
After that, I had a hard time deciding on what I wanted to major in until I took an aptitude test one summer and was recommended to pursue graphic design. At that point, I barely knew much about it but once I learned more about what designers do I realized I had an interest in branding, book covers, posters, magazine layouts, etc. for years I just did not know it was graphic design. The next semester I started my path and was accepted into the creative advertising program at SMU and the rest is history.
My first job was at a mid-size agency where I learned a lot and discovered I really enjoyed designing logos. Now I work at Br-ge in Oak Cliff and love being part of a small team focusing on a variety of graphic design.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
While I do a little bit of everything at my job, I mainly focus on print design, branding, and logos. My favorite designs are ones that are both creative and strategic. In my free time, I like to work on magazines and zines for fun. I mostly use Adobe programs (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.).
Certain things I learned from practicing photography apply to what I do when it comes to design, especially compositions, grids and the creative process in general. I also briefly explored journalism and loved the research aspect of it. Research is usually my first step when it comes to creating any design and is extremely helpful for logos. I like looking beyond just other graphic design work for inspiration so reading up history on something related to a certain project or even looking at textile designs (I really love patterns). I get a lot of inspiration from other designers, but I also gather inspiration from art, films and television, graphic novels, books and music. I think it’s important as a creative to not limit yourself to your concentrated area.
How do you think about success, as an artist, and what do quality do you feel is most helpful?
My mark for success changes every year, but my overall goal is to continue improving. Sometimes I even look at my work I did in the past just to confirm I am getting better and if I’m not I try to take risks on a new project or practice more. I think an essential quality or characteristic that is essential to success is not being afraid of failure. It’s bound to happen and sometimes the best thing come out of a mistake.
