Life and Work with Brittany Blackburn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Blackburn.

Brittany, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I used to be mesmerized by the glamour of Hollywood and all the people in it. It utterly fascinated me how a total stranger could breathe life into his characters through writing and make them connect with me and whatever I was going through. And it didn’t just happen with me. It happened to everyone in the world who was watching (regardless of whether or not they admitted it). That connection, to be completely in tune with the world and people, that’s what I wanted. And so, my dream of becoming a TV writer was born.

In the fall of 2009, I took a year-long screenwriting course through New York Film Academy and completed my first feature-length screenplay. Over the course of seven years, I completed a TV spec script, welcomed some screenplay success from my own marketing efforts and outlined my TV pilot. In the midst of all this, my priorities in life and what I wanted slowly started changing, and I found myself longing for something more.

That something more was Jesus. Although I chose to believe and accept Jesus at an early age, it wasn’t until July 2015 when a dear friend encouraged me to fall completely in love with Him that I began chasing Him fully. Since then, I have lived more joyfully, more abundantly, more confidently and more meaningfully. My dream today is to share Jesus in my writing because without Him, I wouldn’t be here. I believe He’s the something more we all long for. Those who know Him long for more of Him, and those who don’t know Him, who lie awake at night wondering why their lives still seem to be missing something even though they have everything, long for an answer. That answer is Jesus.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Even though I chose to let my dream of becoming a TV writer go, full acceptance of it wasn’t easy. I had to pray, cry and dig deep inside myself before I could fully realize why it was no longer my best fit. I had to deal with some major underlying issues. Once I did, the full realization I had discovered led me to full acceptance of my decision. (Side note: I absolutely loved the education I received at New York Film Academy, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.)

My advice to other young women just starting their journey would be to seek God first. Pray, listen, then do. And never stop writing. If God has gifted you with the ability to write stories and that’s His will for your life, He will bring your dream to pass in His time.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with your business – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I believe what sets me apart from others in my writing about my faith is my complete vulnerability and transparency. I’m never afraid to be 100% real because I know we’ve all been there. Just like everyone’s longing for something more, they’re also longing for someone more. Someone more like them. Someone who can tell them, “Hey, it’s going to be okay. And you’re going to be okay. I know because I’ve been there.”

Who have you been inspired by?
My mom has always been and will always be my biggest inspiration. She raised my two sisters and me as a single mom and has always been there when we needed her. She is always a mom first. She loves us unconditionally and is never afraid to give tough love when we need it. I really appreciate that. She instilled wonderful values in me, and I wouldn’t be the woman I am today without her.
