Today we’d like to introduce you to Janu Kanneganti.
Janu, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Being raised by a mother who sought creativity in her actions and a father who supported that with proactive curiosity helped set the stage for my artistic development. In their attempt to curate my artistry I was enrolled in dance classes and was stopped from painting over any surface I could. Learning how to read using an artist’s eye for colors and tones, getting ready for dance recitals from a young age for my dance recitals, and helping my peers get ready as well made me realize that I was about to adapt to any skin and hair type and easily work with it. The turning point in my life that led me to freelance my skills was a car ride conversation with my dad in my senior year of High School. He advised me to make use of my talent and creativity to practice a delicate process that extends far beyond simply painting a face. Makeup is an art form through which I express my client’s desires and resemble their inner beauty on the exterior. When I work with someone, I approach them with the mindset of how I can bring out the beauty they already possess rather than masking things they might not like about themselves. It is a compassionate art form that relies not only on art skills but also on the understanding of the client’s needs. My drive to work in makeup stems not only from the love of the work I do but for a need to spread the message of how important self-love is. We live in a self-conscious society where people criticize themselves over everything from their skin complexion to its texture. I use makeup as a method to not only address my client’s needs but also bolden features they already possess. I believe that being an entrepreneur extends beyond the mere craft and pushes to using our platform to spread a message.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Nothing in life is a cakewalk and anyone who believes that is simply lying to themselves. Although makeup is an evergreen industry, it is also one that is based on trust and credentials. Standing out as a young entrepreneur amongst the sea of makeup artists in the DFW area comes with its own challenges but I’m proud to say that I’ve overcome the struggles so far and will overcome any hurdles with which the future will greet me.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Makeup and Hair by Janu – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Makeup and Hair by Janu cater to bridal/wedding, prom, sweet 16, editorial, celebrity, and music videos/promos clients. I started as a self-taught MUA(make-up artist) in high school with my only clients being my friends. However, today I’m proud to say that I’ve earned the trust of hundreds of people in the DFW area simply by word of mouth and not any paid advertisements. This goes to show that my quality of work speaks more to the client than any ad campaign will. With my young age and constant technique revival, I offer an extraordinary versatility in my work to all age groups, helping them become anything from natural beauties to glammed divas.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
The future isn’t exactly something I can plan for on an objective level. I do know that I want to continue to use makeup and dance to help promote body positivity and self-love as much as I can, as I was inspired to do so with Deepica Mutyala and her Live Tinted campaign (@livetinted). There’s never going to be a “I want to get to x number of followers” or “have x brand sponsor me”, instead there’s always going to be a “I want to help show everyone they are incredibly beautiful, and incomprehensibly capable in their own unique ways and the world needs to see that.”
