Has it been a smooth road?
The road to what I now consider peace has not been easy. Most people only see and acknowledge the success. But I had to make some tough decisions in my young career. I struggled with choosing a steady paycheck over happiness and I had to realize early on that I had to trust my gut and not let my fears or the fears and negative comments of others play a factor in my professional decisions. I’ve been a licensed attorney for almost three years. I landed my first job as an associate attorney four months after passing the bar. It was a comfortable position. But at the same time, I was miserable. I was in a position where I felt like I was being forced to keep my head down and go with the flow. I wanted to genuinely help people and not just make money off of them.
The firm I worked for it was all about the money and not enough about the people. I was constantly being gripped at about my pro bono work. But at the time, my volunteer work was keeping me sane. I knew working for someone else wasn’t what I was meant to do. I knew as long as someone else signed the paychecks my work would never align with my purpose and I needed it to. I needed to love what I did and how I did it. I toyed around with stepping out on my own for months before I finally jumped. I had older attorneys tell me I wasn’t ready and that I’d never generated enough business to sustain. I had bills, a car note, a dog to feed. My family openly expressed their fears and concerns about me not being able to make money.
But finally, I took a deep breath, I prayed, and I decided it was time to be free. I refuse to spend the next 30 years going through the motions. I want to look back and say my success came from the good I did not from the money I made or just the cases I won. Stepping out on faith was the greatest decision I ever made. Some people think I am silly because a lot of people would have loved to be in the position I was in. But, I am glad that I didn’t make the decision most young professionals make and choose comfort over purpose. I think stepping out on faith is going to make me a better attorney and a better person. 15 months ago I never would have imagined that I’d be running a small practice with two offices. But I trusted God and myself and here I am!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Allen Miles & Associates story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a Personal Injury and Estate Planning attorney. I specialize in Car Wrecks, Slip and Falls, and other Injury related cases. In my Estate Planning practice, I help clients with wills, trust and what I like to call planning for future wealth. I am mostly known as a personal injury attorney but recently I have captured the attention of a few people in my community through the Estate Planning courses I host in my office. What sets me apart from others is I genuinely operate by a client first motto. That’s not a gimmick. My clients are more than just clients. These are my family, friends, and members of my community. Their well being is my priority and I pride my self in providing quality services to them all.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
In the next 5-10 years, I see growth and more growth. Eventually, I would like for our practice to cross state lines. But no matter how big we get I want our core values to remain the same. Our motto is “Real. Reliable. Results.” I want every client that interacts with any office of ours to believe in that motto. With our growth, I want to make sure we continue to provide quality services the communities we represent.
