Today we’d like to introduce you to Shamain Khan.
Shamain, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Art has always been a huge part in my life. Growing up my favorite class to go to was art class. One of my fondest memories as a child was winning an art show in 5th grade and I beat out all the students from grades kindergarden through 12th. So, you can say my love for photography only came naturally later down the road.
Photography quickly became my passion I was always that girl who brought a camera to something as big as a birthday party to something as small as lunch with a friend. I should honestly thank all my family and friends for having to put up with me and my camera for so long. Although back then, I never realized that having a camera on me at all times was such a necessity for me. It wasn’t until I was given a DLSR as a gift from my fiancé at the time (now husband) that I started to take it more seriously which was only a few years ago. I have been fortunate to have a husband that supported me 100% in the career path I chose. For me, photography was a passion that turned into a career. This wouldn’t have been possible without the love and support from my family and friends. I started off with small projects and by word of mouth my business started to grow. The network I’ve made with Instagram has been played a huge role for me as well. It has given me the opportunity to meet so many other creatives and the ability to work with such wonderful people.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It definitely wasn’t a smooth road nor is it still. I still constantly find myself losing motivation and inspiration with my photography but I’ve learned that’s okay. Taking a break and stepping back for a second is also okay. Time away really helps me get inspired and I always find myself being proud of the outcome. Even if it wasn’t some of my best work at the time, I still get to take away something from every shoot. You really do learn more as you go. It’s such a competitive field and it’s challenging to keep up with at times but the best thing to do is just try to keep pushing yourself and to never give up.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Shamain K. Photography – what should we know?
Although I do all kinds of photography what I love capturing the most are portraits and fashion photography. I love being able to capture the different moods and expressions on an individual’s face. Fashion photography gives me to be an ability to play with my creative side. Some of my proudest moments are just having a vision behind a shoot and to see it come to life which truly keeps me motivated.
Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
Growing up, my siblings and I were always taught to have to work hard for the things you want. Going to a school that was filled with kids that were a lot more well-off was hard at times. But I’m proud of the way I was brought up. I learned through hard work the end result was a lot more satisfying than having something just handed to you. Something as important as that can play a huge part in every aspect of your adulthood. Like I said before, this job is competitive and with photography becoming such a trend it can be tough to have your work stand out. The only solution to this is hard work and to keep pushing yourself.
