Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Puente.
Emily, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I definitely have the cliché history of being in a car accident…going to a chiropractor and feeling amazing and then pursuing it as a profession after some direction from some influential people who I realize now were placed in my life during that time to guide me for sure!
As a child I always dreamed of being either a veterinarian or a pediatrician because I LOVE animals and kids! I never dreamed in a million years that I would find a profession in which I could see BOTH of the things I love with specialty training for them specifically in my practice.
Being where I am today though has been due to life I have experienced with my family. I realized that in order to care for my kids the way I knew they deserved I made it my mission to become certified in prenatal and pediatric chiropractic because our training in school just wasn’t enough for me with it being very limited.
My dogs were my first kids and animal chiropractic was something I always thought was the perfect fit so I could adequately take care of my entire family with the confidence and knowledge needed for them to thrive.
I then sought additional training in craniosacral work during my pregnancy and had to travel cross country for it but soon realized it was because I was meant to do this work in my practice as well. The impact it had on my pregnancy and life thereafter was so significant that I knew this work had to be something I offered as well!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Holy smokes no.
School in general was exhausting and expensive. To add in additional training meant more time and money which were the two things I did not have. I put the cost of classes on credit cards and worked as much work study as possible without it affecting my academics.
When opening my own office I knew that I wanted to do this but I also felt the pull that being a mom was my top priority. I felt like an outcast in my community of colleagues who were determined to work full time and put in the man hours to build up their practices into moguls. That just wasn’t my path and did not feel like something I was supposed to do so I instead did block scheduling (which I still do) and felt like my family was always first and my office second (although there’s no shortage of love for my patients 😉 .
I had injuries with each of my pregnancies (one was technically right afterwards) so they were interesting challenges to overcome and learn patience.
When I was in practice as an associate I tore my Achilles and was 3 months pregnant with my second child. This made for a laughing matter when I was adjusting people after rolling into the room on my knee scooter. Haha.
During my maternity leave with my third child I ended up in the hospital with a massive blood clot that required intervention and took away precious time from my new baby and led to learn how to give myself injections which was a HUGE struggle for me since I have a phobia of needles.
Looking back I can say that I am grateful for the life I have experienced in the way it has gone because I have grown so much and am thankful for the abundance of blessings that have come from those events.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
My business is Bridge Family Chiropractic. My husband came up with the name since it is the English translation of our last name Puente. Genius right? 🙂
I have specialty training in prenatal and pediatric chiropractic from the ICPA in addition to animal chiropractic. I have also completed training with Dr. Marcia Schaefer in relation to The Truth About Fertility which addresses pre-conception nutrition for helping create healthier moms, dads and babies. I am kind of a learning junkie and am finishing my certification in Craniosacral work with Dr. Carol Phillips.
I’m always learning something because I love to be able to better serve my patients. That’s one thing that my patients can always count on. If I don’t know how to properly address your concerns I will either 1) find you the BEST referral I know or 2) learn how to address it if there isn’t an appropriate referral
I am different from other offices in how things run at the office. I don’t do walk-ins and am there by appointment only. It has worked wonderfully now for going on 3 years!
What were you like growing up?
I was a typical middle child. Haha.
I had a strong personality even as a child and was quick to be a team captain or leader of some made up game.
I have always loved sports and still play today. My favorite sports are soccer and racquetball.
Now, I love doing things with my kids and gardening and chicken rearing are my hobbies.
