Meet John Francis McCullagh of John FM Films in Flower Mound

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Francis McCullagh.

John Francis, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve wanted to be a film director since I was four years old. Later I would work for the company ScrewAttack.com as a full time video editor. While there I would work on personal side projects with my friend Tim Stevens. We formed a film collaborative called (TitlePending) Productions, producing various shorts. Later I would produce/direct a successful web series for my day job. Near the end of my four years with ScrewAttack I would direct my action/comedy “The Accomplice.” In the film I also play one of the leads called The Thief and I do all my own stunts. Currently “The Accomplice” has been accepted into five film festivals. The ultimate goal of the film is get a feature film version greenlit and distributed. Between now and then I am working with others on getting new film projects and shorts off the ground.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been a smooth road. At times it was difficult because I simply didn’t know what to do or how to gather the people and resources. Every project built up my knowledge and experience, culminating in my most recent short film, The Accomplice. Other struggles were balancing passion projects with a day job, figuring out how to fund projects, pitching projects to produce at ScrewAttack, etc.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the John FM Films story. Tell us more about the business.
While not an official LLC, really just known for me, John FM Films is becoming known for action. As I said I did all my own martial arts and stunts in my short film The Accomplice, as well as other short films and projects I’ve done in the past. What sets me apart from most is not only my attention to detail and my style of action but my personality. To say the least, I’m kind of an odd ball, haha!

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
So an experiment once found that those who believe in luck are actually just more subconsciously open to opportunity. So perhaps, in that regard, I am lucky. Sometimes things to work out in my favor in a somewhat mystifying way. However, at other times, plans completely fall apart at the worst times and I have to postpone important work. So, the jury’s still out on luck in regards to any of my success. Luck or not, I work hard on my projects and try my best to make each one better than the last.
