Meet Kelsey Lewis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelsey Lewis.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Music has been knitted into the very fabric of my being from a very young age. I can remember being a small child and writing a “cool song” with my Dad on a fisher price kid piano. From the very beginning music has always been there to mold me, comfort me, guide me, and heal me. When I was about eight years old, life threw me a huge curveball when I had my very first panic attack at school in the middle of class. From that point on I began a long winding journey through a number of doctor visits, calming methods, and psychiatry appointments. Even in the midst of such a confusing and frightening time in my life, there in the corner of my room was a gray karaoke machine and my faith in Jesus that kept my adolescent heart a float during the many raging storms. Everyone copes differently, my way of coping looked a little like late night journaling sessions that over time evolved into song lyrics. I wrote my very first song at the age of thirteen and since then I haven’t really been able to stop. I found a sense of hope knowing that I was able to create something whimsical and magical from a place of brokenness and in that hope, I wanted to share its life with the world. Fast forward to 2012 I was fortunate enough to release my debut album, “Beautiful View” which capsulated my high school years through songs of life, love, and lessons learned along the way. With the release of “Beautiful View” it has taken me on an exciting ride in which I have been able to perform at some really wonderful venues, meet some really incredible people, record some really fun music videos, and really dive in to new levels of songwriting which has led me to release new singles on the way. I am 23 now and walking into a new season of owning and finding my voice in music, in marriage, in relationships, and in life. I just hope that in some way, shape, or form my music can be used to enrich and touch people’s lives like it has deeply touched mine.

Please tell us about your art.
As a musician and a song writer many people ask me for my “Why?” “Why do you sing?” “Why do your song write?” “Why music?”. Music is my safe haven, always has been and always will be. Songwriting is my outlet and being able to perform and share the lyrics in a visceral way brings my some of the greatest joy. My soul contains so many colors, sounds, and yearnings that might explode if not expressed. Therefore, I do this because it’s who I am. My heart is that each and every listener feels heard, feels connected, and feels uplifted through each and every song I sing.

Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
I absolutely believe that art has the power to move, shake, and stir a culture, a movement and a nation. I believe that we are all given a powerful and innate responsibility as artists and soul excavators to make a difference where and when we are planted. And I believe our surroundings and the timing of events, topics, and commentary have huge weight and inspiration in the heart of an artist. Art is the vastest, and most influencing component in today’s visual and audible world. What we intake is what we put out, and I think that is why, as artists, we have to be so mindful about what we are creating and feeding the world. We want to feed it health, strength, goodness, and vitality in all that we write, paint, build, sing, dance, act, film, etc.
