Art & Life with Sarah Killam

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Killam.

Sarah, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I am an abstract painter and mark-maker working and residing in Austin, Texas. Painting has been my passion for my entire life, so becoming a full-time artist has been nothing short of a dream. The most amazing concept to me is creating something beautiful out of nothing; How everything has a beginning and goes through a process to become something exquisite. This concept is what drives me in my work as an artist. I receive all of my inspiration from the great green world around us, marveling at the craftsmanship and detail that goes into every living and non-living thing. The Creator obviously knew what He was doing. I strive to relay my interpretation of that creation on canvas.

My work is done in acrylic, with details of pen and ink, charcoal, and pastel on linen canvas. I am a firm believer in the beauty that comes from raw elements. My desire for the raw elements in my pieces, such as linen and chalk, is to create conversation between piece and person. My hope is that one of my pieces takes you a little further into yourself and how you see the world around you. Because that is the very gift that creating art has given me.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I receive all of my inspiration from the great green world around us, marveling at the craftsmanship and detail that goes into every living and non-living thing. The Creator obviously knew what He was doing. I strive to relay my interpretation of that creation on canvas.

My work is done in acrylic, with details of pen and ink, charcoal, and pastel on linen canvas. I also build and stretch my own canvases. I am a firm believer in the beauty that comes from raw elements. My desire for the raw elements in my pieces, such as linen and chalk, is to create conversation between piece and person.

What responsibility, if any, do you think artists have to use their art to help alleviate problems faced by others? Has your art been affected by issues you’ve concerned about?
No, I don’t think that the role of artists change based on what is happening in the world. I think artists roles have always been consistent since the beginning of time. Art allows people to step back and really reflect internally on what matters to the individual. It also allows people to get a small glimpse of the world through another person’s eyes. Art is all about perspective, and that perspective of art creates conversation. My hope is that no matter what is going on in international events and issues, my art takes you a little further into yourself and how you see the world around you. Because that is the very gift that creating art has given me.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
Most of my work is showcased on Instagram right now. I am launching my website this upcoming week, which is www.sarahkillam.com. My pieces are also displayed in a few different public establishments, like Triangle Coffee Co. in Tulsa, Oklahoma and Thatcher Retail Company in Buda, Texas.

People can support my work by following along on Instagram @sarahkillamstudio. I have been truly overwhelmed by the feedback and support I have received regarding my art journey. All the love and positivity has really just reassured me that this is what I was made to do. I will be launching a series of prints that people can purchase on my website! Original pieces or commissions can be purchased/requested on my website as well.
