Today we’d like to introduce you to Tegan Skaggs.
Tegan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have made “art” for as long as I can remember, but as I have gotten older and have less and less time for myself I just don’t have the time to sit down and create like I used to. I feel like photography has filled a void that until I picked it up and fell in love with it, I didn’t know I had. It has an almost instant satisfaction quality to it. Something I didn’t have with traditional painting and sculpture. I am creative. If I am not creating, what’s the point? I came across photography completely by accident. Through a YouTube vlogger/photographer named Ben Brown. His adventures in Africa is what inspired me to buy my first camera. The rest is history.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It defiantly hasn’t been a smooth road. I wouldn’t change a thing, that being said. Finding your style and your passion isn’t easy. I had many moments when I wanted to give up. I didn’t want to try anymore. My advice to young women is don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do something. If you want it, make it happen.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Wicked Perspective Photography – what should we know?
I specialize in wildlife photography and portrait photography. I need a subject, a connection. Most people know me from my night photo series. I use prisms and fairy lights to illuminate my subject and create an almost ethereal mood. That isn’t what I want to be known for, however. I want to be known for my work with wildlife, namely zebras in particular. Zebra and other equids have been a lifelong passion for me. Proud moments for me would be being featured by Kruger National Park and Cape Town Etc, a website about the comings and goings around Cape Town South Africa.
Which women have inspired you in your life?
Nicole Eddy has been an inspiration to me since day one. She’s a strong and intelligent woman who isn’t afraid to strike out on her own and make it happen. Jane Goodall and her absolute passion for chimpanzees and their conservation is another major source of inspiration for me. Men told her she couldn’t and she did it anyway.
