Today we’d like to introduce you to William Morton.
William began his photography passion in Junior High School on the yearbook staff, and he continued through high school. While serving in the U.S. Navy, William opened his first portrait studio in Washington upon his return from the (first) Gulf War in 1991. Upon transferring to California, he helped manage a busy mall portrait studio for a few years, learning the importance of speed and efficiency – and making every shot count. Upon leaving the Navy he reopened his own studio in San Diego. Between model portfolios and acting headshots, his advertising photography evolved. Including a few years in the L.A. market, William spent 9 years with this work. In 2004, he was hired as the Photography Manager for a national franchise company, and he spent 5 years training portrait and event photographers nationwide. This experience solidified his expertise covering events, and helped him to quickly assess opportunities operating on location.
Beginning in 2009 William reopened his own studio business focusing on B2B imaging. His niche is now in corporate communications, ranging from executive portraits and business headshots to large scale corporate events. His work has now appeared in numerous publications, and even a billboard in San Diego. His recent move to the Lone Star state allowed him to open and manage a beautiful new rental studio facility in north Dallas, and reinventing his business in Texas has allowed him to add video to his service offerings. Continual growth and expansion, as well as a focus on customer service, has been the key to William’s 25+ years of professional experience.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The creative industry is anything but smooth, particularly with technological innovations. Relocations provide the greatest challenge, forcing you to “reinvent” yourself in each new market. Moving to Texas, for example, forced Morton Visuals to start all over again with no client base. However, this is an effective reminder to focus on customer service, and to build new relationships – both of which contribute to long term success. So far, I love Texas, and its very different business climate is invigorating.
