Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Badran.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born in the Philippines and immigrated to America when I was five. I relocated to Dallas which is where I grew up most of my life. I ended up going to college at the University of North Texas where I majored in Strategic Communications and Public Relations.
I started my journey as an intern for 97.9 where I was involved in street team and promotional events. From there I landed a job working events for boutique hotels such as Hotel Zaza and The W. I also worked for a boutique PR firm called Culture-Hype and did a one year stint with Universal Music Group.
All of this experience laid the foundation for what I was to do next. In 2013 I was chosen to be the Director for RAW Dallas a part of the international independent arts organization called RAW: natural born artists. I launched the location in the city and from there I ended up producing over 20 large scale showcases featuring over 1000 local artists in art, fashion, music, dance and hair and makeup.
The 3 yrs. I ran RAW Dallas as the Director really thrusted me into the scene and helped me find my purpose which is to help artists. After I left the company I started my own hence Creative Currency was born. I wanted a more personal experience to working with artists and to practice what I got my degree in. I have ran several successful campaigns through Creative Currency for local talent such as Sikwitit, DJ Poizon Ivy, DJ Christy Ray, The World Famous Tony Williams and Tru Def just to name a few. I have also worked with brands such as Red Bull, Adidas, Hennessey, Bud Light and Studio Movie Grill.
As of the last year I have partnered with Premier Live Experience, a talent buying agency and taken an additional role as VP of Talent and Media. I have hosted concerts and set up promotional tours for artists such as Bun B, Ja Rule and Ashanti, Eric B and Rakim, Ginuwine, Day 26, Nipsey Hussle and Dave East.
I have been independent for the last 5 years and I love what I do.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Nothing in life ever comes easy.
The hardest part is being a woman in a male-dominated industry and getting them to respect you. It was also a struggle to first win over the scene here in Dallas.
I had to do a lot to prove my legitimacy and gain the trust of the city.
Creative Currency – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Creative Currency is a creative marketing agency rooted in Public Relations and Brand Management. My specialties include media relations and events. I also specialize in brand partnerships and endorsement deals.
I utilize unique strategies in my approach and like to be as forward-thinking as possible. I love breeding leaders in different industries. There have been several special moments and experiences we have created as a company but I love hosting events that encourage diversity and culture.
I am most proud of helping artists get the shine they deserve. There is so much talent in the city sometimes they just need the platform to be seen or heard.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me is dreaming big and having the focus and drive to execute against your goals whether they are small or big. When I’m looking to work with an artist I make sure that they have a clear understanding of what they want and are willing to work hard for it.
We live in a society where it is perceived that great things happen out of luck, I truly believe you can make anything happen if you have a will to do anything to make it happen.
