Today we’d like to introduce you to De Anna Washington.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
At an early age, I dreamed of being a pop star. From Middle School to High School, I even tried to form a girl band. In college, I studied music education, and composition. I became a certified songwriter from Berklee College of Music. I traveled across Dallas doing open mic sessions. I was a worship leader for a church outreach program, and a top line writer for a few producers. At the end of the day, I was still broke. So, I decided to get a “real job.” A desk job. I had stopped singing and playing the piano. While, working in the office for more than ten years I felt as if my dreams would never come true. I was very unhappy. Finally, when I was drained and had enough, I put in my notice.
Then, I was invited as a guest speaker for a choir class. They asked me to sing a song. So, I sang a song I wrote. The class stood frozen with their mouths opened. Suddenly, they cheered for me, and asked me for my autograph!! I was like “You guys, I am just a voice instructor!!” But to them I was a pop-star. That’s when I knew this was my calling.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Summer is a slow season for teaching, but good for travel. I am looking forward to fall because students are already registering.
The Craft Music Studio – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
The Craft Music Studio is a private voice and piano studio. The definition of Craft is: The skilled practice of a practical occupation. Practice. (wink wink) To be a master craftsman you must PRACTICE.
We pour our hearts and souls into our student’s lessons. We really want them to be successful. We help them to reach their goals by teaching them the basic foundation of music. From theory to ear training. Technique is very important when it comes mastering the art of music. A lot of studios skip over this very important aspect.
The Craft Music Studio works with bands, solo artists, aspiring artists and rappers. We teach classical, pop, rock, r&b, gospel and country music. We are very selective with whom we chose to teach. We want students who are committed. We want them to flourish in their gifts and to share it with others. If you are someone who is preparing for an audition, a performance, a recording studio session, or you are an aspiring artist. If you are tired of only doing two recitals a year. If you want to compete, earn awards, write your own songs, be in a group or band. Then, The Craft Music Studio is the place for you!!
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
We define success as, our students being happy and accomplishing something that they have only dreamed of.
