Today we’d like to introduce you to Holly Lockett.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Holly. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
How I got started… Well, I think I was born knowing that I wanted to help people in some capacity, I just wasn’t sure which one. I was adopted at birth so I have always felt like I need to pay it forward. When I was a child, I wanted to be a doctor but as I traveled I saw a different kind of suffering and knew that I wanted to help people who could not help themselves. In undergraduate school I majored in criminal justice and psychology because I wanted to figure out what made people tick and why we do what we do. I have always had a passion for working with children so I focused a lot of my studies on juvenile justice. That lead me to learn just how much trauma and abuse children in the justice system have faced. My first internship was at a police department where I was lucky enough to have a Chief who also had a passion for helping children and families. He wrote a grant to help fund a new division of the police department that was dedicated to diversion programs for youth in. While I thoroughly loved my work there, my husband suggested a move to Dallas for his career. And off we went. When we arrived here I started to work for Adult Probation which I was very passionate about! The people I worked with were amazing, the populations that I was able to serve altered my life view and I was able to see just how much our system needed to be changed. So, the logical next step was to head to law school.
I was just getting ready to take my entrance exam when I got the call that my brother was sick. We knew he had some heart issues but had no idea how bad his health truly was. After almost two years of pain and suffering he lost his battle and died in February 2007. His death changed my entire family. He had a five year old daughter who could not possibly understand what was happening, my father felt like he failed because he could not save his son, my mother could hardly breathe for years and my other brother and I were just left to watch it all unfold unable to fix anything. During that time we wanted to get my niece some help so I called a child psychologist I know who told me “she just needs to cry her way through it.” That was an unacceptable answer for me. I was furious because everywhere we turned professionals were basically telling my entire family the same thing: “Grief is tough, it takes time, and you just need to cry.”
Up to that point the thought of being a counselor never crossed my mind. This experience changed my course and now I own a private practice where I make it my mission to be a place where people can feel heard, can heal, and where they can experience their grief in a way that best suits them. I truly believe there is no greater honor than to be chosen by someone to help them through their pain.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t believe anything worth doing is simple or easy. I think my biggest challenge was in graduate school as a few of my professors didn’t think I had the personality to be a good therapist. I was told that I belonged in the court system that my Myers Briggs personality code wasn’t cut out to be a counselor, along with other discouraging feedback. I think I struggled because I am more solutions focused and more direct than the typical counselor. However, my clients love and appreciate that and they know I am genuine. They know I want them to feel better and they know I will never stop until they do. Turns out that this is just the type of therapist that my clients want!
