Meet Hannah Vaughan of Baby Bangs Podcast

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Vaughan.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up in DFW, and went to Lewisville High School. I attended Texas Tech, and after returning to DFW for a few years began performing stand-up comedy in January 2017. I started with a class, and quickly started doing open mics multiple times a week. Now I do open mics regularly, host an open mic, and perform on shows in DFW and festivals outside of town when possible. The comedy scene is very friendly, and I made a fast friend in Emily Ball. Emily and I love podcasts, music, and pop culture of all times but bonded over a shared sense of awkwardness that we felt most people left behind in middle school. We created our podcast: Baby Bangs! Baby Bangs is a hairstyle that both Emily and I are intimidated by. It’s a short, blunt bang that definitely makes a statement, and we wanted to channel that level of confidence. On our podcast every Tuesday we try something new, give each other advice, and have a topic of the week. So far we have had water balloon fights, talked about adult relationships with our families, and looked at bizarre hand sculptures. Our goal is to have fun, but not shy away from the things that are tough about being a woman.

Has it been a smooth road?
We’ve had to learn quickly about sound editing, audio equipment, content hosting, and social media for podcasts. These were all new worlds to us! We are still learning, but in earlier episodes we sound like we’re in the bottom of a well and the sound quality has definitely improved overtime.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Baby Bangs Podcast story. Tell us more about the business.
Our podcast is named Baby Bangs because Baby Bangs is a hairstyle that both Emily and I are intimidated by. Our goal is to have fun, but not shy away from the things that are tough to talk about. We’ve talked about religion, and our health issues, but we ultimately want to show that feeling like an awkward adult doesn’t have to be lonely, and can be a lot of fun!

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Podcasting in general has taken off in the last 5-10 years, and moving forward I think we will see different formats of content. From interviews to fiction, I think the variety of podcasts will continue to grow much like we see more diversity in television and film programming. I think the shifts in podcasting will happen much faster than what we see in TV and film due to the social media world podcasts started from, hosting platforms will need to become more user friendly, and getting started with podcasts will become a checklist rather than a DIY. Establishing and maintaining fan bases will be more and more of a challenge as the number of programs to choose from increases, but with more content will come excellent art.
