Today we’d like to introduce you to Cindy Portillo.
Cindy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always had an interest in photography, but these “big cameras” were always a bit intimidating- so many buttons and menus etc. So I went the “simple” route and shot with an old Nikon film camera that was always around the house… you pop in the film and shoot. Simple, Right? No. not really, but I was determined to learn. After I got married, 10 years ago is where my passion really grew. My wedding photos returned and I was not pleased, although my husband and I researched, interviewed and reviewed their portfolio – the photographers unfortunately didn’t deliver the outcome we expected. Images were not up to the standards they had shown us. I was determined to try and save my wedding images by perhaps re-editing them. I went back to school and started with a black and white film class and continued on to an additional 4 semesters of both film and digital photography. I eventually re-edited my wedding images, but the damage was too much.
I have a Human Resources Management background in which I worked for approximately 12 years until we had our daughter who ultimately was the reason for me to take an absence from my corporate world and focus more on her and my family, after 3 years of being home with her and working off and on, I decided to make my “leave” more permanent and this is when I started to focus more on photography. I worked as an editor and shot many weddings for other photographers before I ventured on my own. Today I focus on High School Senior photography, an area I have found to be very passionate about. I’m very much a girly girl and love working with my clients to prepare their personalized senior session, one that fits their needs and is specifically created for them. We provide a carefree, worry free experience taking care of everything from helping you choose your wardrobe, selecting a location and even bringing on the best of DFW’s hair and makeup artists.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It is definitely not a walk in the park. Photography is a journey, so many things to learn and it certainly isn’t just about clicking a button. The amount of time and money spent to learn the craft can drain you both mentally and financially, but when you are passionate about this art you take on the struggle, the up and downs and just learn as you go.

Today I focus on High School Senior photography, an area I have found to be very fond about. I’m very much a girly girl and love working with my clients to prepare their personalized senior session, one that fits their needs and is specifically created for them. We provide a carefree, worry free experience taking care of everything from helping you choose your wardrobe, selecting a location and even bringing on the best of DFW’s hair and makeup artists.
I also shoot a limited amount of weddings throughout the year – although I focus on High School Seniors there’s something about weddings I can’t stay away from.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I feel like creating a special relationship with your clients is key. You already learned the craft so you know that you will be able to provide them with great quality, however it’s time to create a great line of communication with your clients and make sure that you are in fact not just delivering a product, but a great experience.
