Meet Morgan Butler of Digital BizCom in Plano

Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan Butler.

Morgan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up I quickly realized that the only subject I really clicked with in school was English. Math and science are like foreign languages to me, so when it came time to declare a major in college journalism seemed like the only fit. Like so many other college students I went through the progression of thinking I wanted to be a news anchor or traditional journalist working for a paper. It only took me one year of news writing to realize I needed something a little more creative that could come with more freedom. Enter public relations!

I landed my first internship in PR my sophomore year and that’s when I was hooked. Don’t get me wrong, I was terrified most of the time. The first time I pitched I had a reporter answer the phone with “you have 5 seconds to make me interested,” which of course made me shy to pitch for a while. During that internship I truly lived out “fake it ‘til you make it,” and had so much fun doing it. I got to put on a media event with a Dallas Cowboy, pitch media for the first time and write my first press release.

Fast forward some years and lots of hard work later, and today I am really doing my dream job! I’ve been at BizCom for a little over 2 years now. I started in a traditional PR role as an Account Manager and worked my way to become an Account Executive. I’ve had the opportunity to work on exciting clients like Edible Arrangements, Solera and more while earning them headlines and interviews with TODAY.com, Inc., Forbes and The Wall Street Journal.

Things were going great as an AE but I started realizing how much digital and influencer marketing was growing and how our clients were becoming increasingly interested in partnering with influencers. One morning in a meeting we were discussing an influencer campaign that a client was interested in doing and I said I really think I can execute it, so my bosses let me and that was the start of our digital division!

I’m now the Director of Digital Services and am so thankful for the opportunity to be doing what I love at an agency I love working for.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been a bumpy road but I’ve loved the journey! Just like every other new grad, coming out of school I was overwhelmed and intimidated to join the workforce.

When I did land a job, I remember the first client call I did by myself and I was so nervous! It’s funny to think back to all those firsts: the first time I pitched a reporter at a big network, the first press release I wrote, the first time sending something over the wire, and more. I was so nervous for all of it, but soon enough they all became the norm.

The very beginning of my career specifically was full of lessons learned. I think the biggest struggle I had was being confident in myself and my work. As a young professional it’s often more comfortable to stay silent than offer your ideas or thoughts, but speaking up and sharing my ideas empowered me to feel more confident and I think also helped earn the confidence of my clients and peers.

I’ve always been very fortunate to be surrounded with some really amazing leaders that have trusted and empowered me to do my job as best as I can. Sometimes it felt a little uncomfortable but I’ve found that I grow the most when I’m uncomfortable.

Digital BizCom, a division of BizCom Associates – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Digital BizCom is a division of BizCom Associates. We are a digital marketing agency that helps businesses of all sizes better understand and use social media, partner with influencers, and use other online tools to market their products and services. The beauty of digital marketing is that it allows businesses to collect a lot of important data. However, we also know that the data can be confusing and often misleading. What sets us apart is that we don’t just create a digital marketing program and put it into action, we help the client understand the data so they can see what is working, what isn’t working and, even more importantly, why or why not.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
As I’ve mentioned the road hasn’t always been easy or smooth, but with a lot of hard work there is a lot that I’m proud of. Anytime I’ve secured a client feature it’s a proud moment, but overall I’m most proud of creating an opportunity to blend my two passions, social media and PR, into my current role.

I’ve gone back and forth on which path (social or PR) I really want to stick with and doing the digital work I do now allows me to do both. Like I shared earlier, the idea came from a meeting when a client wanted to incorporate influencer work and I knew I could execute it better than the path they were looking to take. From there I created all the paperwork, processes and a database and I got to work. The end result was better than I even thought it could be from the beginning. We earned over 6 million impressions and grew their Instagram following by almost 120 percent.

Being able to do this kind of work for nationally recognized brands is something I’m always proud of!
