Today we’d like to introduce you to Abigail Brown.
Abigail, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I started working in clay halfway through college and fell in love with it. I really enjoy the tactile feel and physicality of making products. I thrive on the idea of my handmade work making it in to the hearts of others’ lives through use and the act of nourishment.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I feel that my work is for people who strive to live a handmade lifestyle. I think that the things we use should be beautiful, functional and inspiring not just popped off an assembly line. I create porcelain functional ware, with custom bright mid-range glazes. My work is either wheel thrown or slip casted, showcasing a variety of surface treatments with a playful touch.
Artists face many challenges, but what do you feel is the most pressing among them?
Well this could defiantly be a long-winded question starting anywhere from high cost of living and lack of studio spaces to idea theft from major corporation, but for me I would have to say our cultures tendencies to use more, buy more, and throw away more. We are an instant gratification kind of culture many people do not want to wait for a well-made product to be crafted for them or to spend the money on a handmade piece when they can just pop in to target and buy a whole set of hips looking products that have just been churned out in china.
Mass production and lack of the publics want to have well-crafted products that last a life time verses cheap mass fabricated junk that they throw away with the season is definitely a big challenge facing fine craft functional artist. But the more people are educated about how things are made and where they come from the more interested they seem in changing their ways and opting for handmade, which makes me feel like there is a great future for the crafts.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
