Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Alan Wilcox.
Scott Alan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
After growing up in the quiet suburbs of Dallas, I embraced my adventurous spirit and moved into downtown Dallas as soon as I could. My journey into photography started after purchasing a disposable black and white film camera back in the nineties. I walked the city streets of downtown Dallas and captured many images that ultimately ended up being sold in various galleries around town. That sparked my interest as a photographic artist and I wanted to sustain myself working as a professional photographer. I soon began working as a photographic assistant in Dallas learning from local masters of photography which lead to my taking on paid work as a photographer. I was fortunate enough to have a few mentors along the way who helped me to become the photographer I am. While capturing images for my art, I worked taking portraits, spent over a decade photographing weddings, and eventually arrived at shooting commercial work. I now focus (I love a good pun) on architectural photography. My success has allowed me the opportunity to participate in another great interest of mine, charity work.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
In my experience, most professional artists find that there are hills and valleys when it comes to success in the professional world. The most obvious struggle is balancing your professional work with your artistic ideas, and making the two merge in a satisfying way. I enjoy this challenge quite a bit.
Scott Alan Wilcox Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Scott Alan Wilcox Photography L.L.C. is primarily hired by architectural firms, construction contractors, interior design companies, and marketing specialists. I am known for my work in these circles for my ability to see an image in my mind from looking at a physical location and realizing that image into reality. Over the years I have learned the cost of a job must match that particular project, as every project is unique. I am proud of the relationships I have been fortunate enough to achieve. My clients trust me to capture their concepts and ideas in a photographic image.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
When defining success I find it important to have clearly defined your goal first. So your success markers will vary depending on the thing being measured. I define success in my business as well as my personal life as achieving a balance between all things that grant me a certain peace of mind that allows me the opportunity to encourage others.
Any big shifts, changes, trends, etc?
I think it is clear the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (a.k.a. drones) is currently augmenting the photographic industry, both recreational and professional. I acquired my FAA Drone Pilot License over a year ago and have been incorporating the use of drones in my shoots ever since. Additionally, I have added video to my services so that my clients can receive the full spectrum of media to market their projects.
If you had to start over, what would you have done differently?
Start shooting earlier in life! I always had a passion for creating art but it wasn’t until my mid-twenties that I embraced photography as a means to express myself. That would have led to me discovering this great city earlier on as well as begin my desire to travel at an earlier age.
