Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Gilliland.
Kevin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve been very fortunate to work with some great company’s – Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, Johnson and Johnson, and worked with some very talented men and women in our field. I’ve also had a chance to collaborate with professionals all over the country which really opens your eyes to a much broader range of treatment. I’d love to say it was part of my master plan, but it wasn’t. I’ve always enjoyed the field of counseling, whether it was treating people or doing research or teaching graduate students. I somehow chose a major in college and ended up falling in love with what I get to do.
Again, not really my plan, but all those experiences helped shape what we ended up doing at Innovation 360. We set out to develop a program that was really geared towards what people needed. In the process, we saw the need for a wider range of behavioral health services and saw a big gap between individual therapy and residential therapy. We take quite a bit of time, lots of collaboration on the front end, so that we can provide individualized treatment.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not exactly smooth, especially when you are filling a gap in healthcare services. As mental health providers, we all know there is a huge gap of services that people need. We do really well if you need a lot of treatment – good residential care – and we do pretty good if you just need a little help – individual therapy or support groups. But for the majority of people that need more than talking one time a week and don’t need to leave their job or family for a month, there aren’t really any accessible services. Whenever you talk to psychiatrists or therapists, they all have clients that need services that our field doesn’t offer. Those conversations helped shape the services we offer.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Innovation360 – what should we know?
In short, we’re an outpatient behavioral health company specializing in helping people with mental health and addictions issues. We work with a client’s psychiatrist or therapist to augment a client’s treatment. In addition to very targeted and specific recovery groups we offer Life Development, a specialized service where trained professionals actually spend time with clients for specified periods of time away from therapy to help them translate insights into behavior.
Along with the fun and talented people we work with, I’m most proud of our results in helping clients. We’ve seen a significant reduction in addiction relapses and re-hospitalizations for the clients in our program.
What sets Innovation360 apart from other is offering unique groups like those for Women with Anxiety or Sexual Addiction. Our Life Development is the only program I know of where we actually join clients in their everyday lives. It makes a tremendous difference in outcomes.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
It has to be more than simply “my symptoms are gone – I’m not drinking, I’m not feeling depressed or anxious.” That’s just the beginning. We have to do more than that, we have to help people function better in their lives – at work, with their spouse and kids, and get back to enjoying the things in our life. And fun. We’re going to struggle in this life, but if we do it right, we can have wonderful seasons that are filled with friends, family, and work that we love.
