Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Ndubilo.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As a little girl, I used to watch the stylists at a braiding salon across from where I lived and I’d go home and practice on my Grandmother. As I grew older, I always had to have dolls with long hair because I loved styling hair. By the time I got to middle school and high school, I started charging for my hair styling services. I was the girl braiding hair after school in the bleachers or on the bus ride to a basketball game or track meet. In college, I was the girl on campus that did hair. I was an accounting major until my junior year when I was in the class that everyone took and dropped several times. It was then that I asked myself if I really wanted to be an accountant. I thought, well I’d like to have my own salon today and ended up switching to Business Management and Marketing. Upon graduation, I started working in retail management but did not like it. I quickly enrolled in cosmetology school and finished within a year and a half. I have now been a professional cosmetologist for seven years. About 4 years ago, I started the journey of opening my very own salon. In March of 2017, I purchased an office condo that I had built with plumbing and specifications for salon use. It’s my dream come true! I’m looking forward to building my business and brand and living the dream!
Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. When I first started, my clientele was small. I had to patiently build my clientele over the years.
Also, in preparation to purchase the condo that would house my salon studios, it took about 2 years to get all my ducks in a row. I became a legitimate business which put me in the place present to the VP of a bank my business plan and financials.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Pampered Tresses by Melissa & Pamper Me Salon Spa Studios – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am a hair stylist and owner. As a hairstylist, I offer hair care services. If I had to choose a specialty I would say hair weaving and wig making. As an owner, I manage the overall welfare of the salon. I provide the beauty professionals in my salon a beautiful space, business education, and tools to manage their businesses successfully.
What sets me apart is my background in business. Having a business degree and having worked in the field before starting my cosmetology career I feel has given me an edge and helped me be successful with my beauty career. I’m passionate about paying it forward so I teach other beauty professionals a course I created called Entrepreneur Essentials.
I’m most proud to date to have a booming hair care business and to have purchased my own salon space so I can stop renting but starting building equity and wealth.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love when I’m done with a client’s hair and they have an extra pep in their step, I love being able to make women feel and look beautiful. I like the fact that most people in my area are working professionals with families. I can relate to that and I feel these types of people appreciate what I offer in my business.
