Meet Ginger Curtis of Urbanology Designs in Fort Worth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ginger Curtis.

Ginger, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I stated the design firm in 2015 just I was finishing up my last round of chemo (18 months of treatment) for a Breast cancer diagnosis. Just before I had been diagnosed, I was designing and building furniture. Once I was done with treatment I knew there was a change coming, and after a lot of prayer and deliberation Urbanology Designs was birthed. I had been offered jobs in the design community, but I had a vision for something different.

That something different was the unique brand Urbanology Designs that we are quickly becoming known for.

Very shortly after, I opened the doors to my firm, one of our rooms was featured on houzz and it went viral. It has now become the number one most popular kids room in the entire world. From there we were flooded with business and stay booked a minimum of 3 months in advance most of the time. After that, we received a Best of Award for customer service from HOUZZ and then this year we took home Best of Awards for design and customer service! This recognition continued to reaffirm our brand, build trust, and highlight what we do best.

During this time, I worked tirelessly on our social media efforts to continue to build brand awareness. This also paid off big time. Some of my best clients found us on Instagram. I also started receiving resumes from all over the country for people who wanted to come work with our firm! I’ve secured some of the most talented hard-working women I know!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not smooth! Ha! I wish 😉 Starting a business was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. Being an entrepreneur is not for the faint of heart. I finally became more afraid not to try then to fail, and that’s where everything started. Courage is not the absence of fear, but be willing to make decisions and take actions despite it. -Neslon Mandela

I say this because I face new fears every single day, and everyday it’s a choice to face them and to either take risk or become obsolete. This is the life of a business owner. There have been pitfalls along the way, sure, but the biggest obstacle by far has always been myself. The battle that would often rage in my mind, if I could do this, or if I was cut out for this. Those words had to fade in the distance, but it was not an easy road. When your vision becomes bigger than your fear you don’t have to wait till you feel ready to take action, you take action, and that’s what resolves fear and prepares you to take more action that will lead to success.

Urbanology Designs – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We specialize in interiors that are three things, simple, creative and beautiful and of course let’s not forget the less glamorous sister, her name is functional but she’s no less important. We don’t create designs that are fussy or pretentious but livable and welcoming. Why? Because our clients aren’t fussy or pretentious they are real people who care about real things and don’t time have time to waste on things that are not important.

We are known for our out of the box thinking, creating spaces that are truly one of a kind. We are driven by the idea of something new, something different, something completely unique. We are also known for excellence and outstanding customer service. We do this naturally, because that is who we are. We care about people more then we care about things, from our clients, to our contracts, subs and vendors. We believe in doing what’s right.

I am most proud of the incredibly talented and hardworking women who are the backbone of Urbanology Designs. They invest their whole hearts, and because of that they never cease to amaze me.

What sets us apart is at the rapid rate we have grown! I hired 4 people in our first year of business! I went from being a one man show to an employer and successful business owner.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Receiving a 1st place designer of the year award from the Interior Design Society. The IDS is one of the country’s largest design organizations, and the top designers all over the country compete for the coveted best of awards. It was a beautiful children’s room we designed that won us the award!
