Today we’d like to introduce you to S.O.I Duka.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I got my start in Marlin, Texas. The home of one of the greatest bar-b-que (Whup’s) and fried rib (The Wagon) joints ever to be created. My journey took me through 8 years of military service. I served in Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2007 and Operation Enduring Freedom 2010. As far as the music goes I started in 1999 rapping in front of coke machines at lunch, freestyling, as they would call it. Finally, in 2017 I took this music thing serious and released my debut album AwaKKKe The CritiXXX. I never knew my name would land on a Grammy ballot but this album took me there, this fall I am releasing my first single of 2018 entitled “Big Facts” produced by Maximum producer “iproducethesouth” a teacher and engineer of Media Tech Institute.
Please tell us about your art.
The art I create derives from a place of pain, happiness and cultural change. I try my best to deliver a message of hope, fun, and finding beauty in the black struggle. I would love for other to know that my music is different from any of the modern raps we hear. I need the supporters to take away love, happiness, peace, and most of all TRUTH.
What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
Popularity wins the contest. The message doesn’t matter anymore. Life has become harder for artist that deliver substance in their art. A city like Dallas could rally the base and just stand with their artist.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
By searching S.O.I Duka on all of the major distribution sites i.e. Apple, Tidal Spotify etc. The biggest support I need from people is to add me on their medias IG, Twitter, snapchat etc. (@soi_duka)
