Meet Caroline Nelson of Lucky Peacock Designs in University Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Caroline Nelson.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My story started in 2007. I was working from home with a company based in Atlanta, and I had just had my 2nd child. After returning from maternity leave that spring, my boss informed me that my contract was not being renewed. So, I had to figure out another means of income! I wanted to stay at home with my 2 children, so I started making children’s clothing and selling it through Trunk Shows, Etsy, and eventually my own website. That company was called Little Cupcakes Company. I continued doing that for about 7 years – and finally my kids got bigger, my friends and customers kids got bigger, and eventually no one was needing as many clothes and baby goods. I took a deep breath and decided what I wanted to do next.

For a short stint, I started substitute teaching at Highland Park Day School. I loved it but the job was quite tiring as I already had 2 kids at home needing may full attention. After about a year of teaching, I decided to get my hand back into being an entrepreneur.

That’s when I started Lucky Peacock Designs in 2014. I love estate sale shopping, and I started buying Vintage jewelry and repurposing the pieces. I sold some of the pieces at local Trunk Shows, and not long after that this new “Jewelry Design” business took off. Eventually I started adding in clothing and accessories. I started doing Instagram sales in May of 2016. Since then, I have grown my Instagram account and sales to almost 17,000 followers. Every week, there are new outfits displayed and customers comment on pictures to purchase items. I also have a website – www.shopluckypeacock.com – but the freshest inventory comes through weekly sales on Instagram.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like any small business, there have been struggles! The best part of owning your own business is being able to work from home. The worst part of owning your own business is that is never closes. There is always something to do. I love it, so it doesn’t seem like work to me – so that is good! The other obstacle for me is the operations piece…I hate accounting. Enough said 🙂

Lucky Peacock Designs – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Lucky Peacock Designs is primarily a clothing + accessories outlet with Instagram sales every Tuesday. We create unique styles with our outfits and one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces to suit every style.

Another facet of the business is a love of Estate Sale + Vintage shopping. We will find old jewelry pieces and repurpose them, and occasionally sell vintage pieces on the Instagram page.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Gosh this is hard. I am proud of the being able to bring cute things to people all over the US! I think people have fun looking at our page, and hopefully they have even more fun wearing our Weekly Finds from the weekly sales!
