Art & Life with Dr. Tye and Courtney Caldwell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Tye and Courtney Caldwell.

ShearShare was born out of sheer necessity. (No pun intended!) When Tye and Courtney expanded their beauty and barber salon several years ago, they had empty space that sat idle for several month. Around that same time, Tye started to receive phone calls from stylists who just wanted to rent by the day. This was very odd because the way stylists find professional space to work hasn’t changed since 1916: you sign a long-term contract and work out of the same chair or suite for months or years.

This was a huge shift away from the normal standard. Looking to recoup the investment for his salon remodel, Tye decided to host the visiting cosmetologist and charge her on a per-day basis. It was such a great experience that Tye then helped the stylist find other hosts in other cities who would also allow her to rent by the day. This stylist started telling other stylists about what they were doing, and so they soon found themselves manually matching cosmetologists for three years before they searched for an app, couldn’t find one, and decided to build out the technology themselves. That’s when the idea for the ShearShare app was born!

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
ShearShare is the first app that let stylists rent space to work by the day in cities all over the world! ShearShare connects salon and barbershop owners to these licensed creatives to fill unused suites and stations on demand. It’s a win-win because salon and barbershop owners make money on their empty chairs, and licensed cosmetologists and barbers find professional space to work by the day! ShearShare is currently in 380 cities, 11 countries.

ShearShare supports the changing landscape of stylists, as 70% are choosing to become independent. From professional products to retail sell-through to tools and equipment, these stylists manage their own businesses as solopreneurs. But no matter how independent the stylist, they will tell you that the salon is where they do their best work because the salon is where they were classically-trained. ShearShare supports the growing freelance market of creative stylists around the world.

In your view, what is the biggest issue artists have to deal with?
The biggest challenge facing our fellow beauty and barbering artists today is a dearth of B2B tools that support the independent stylist. ShearShare’s ecosystem provides access to space and other tools that help industry professionals maximize their earnings potential.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
