Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikki Smith.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I began hand making modern dainty jewelry to wear to my corporate buying job- I worked for JCPenney headquarters for 6 years in buying and allocation. I quickly began selling the pieces I wore daily, and my passion transitioned from being on the buying side of the business to selling my own handcrafted jewelry. My pieces are designed and created from semi-precious gemstones, druzys, pearls and gold filled materials. Each piece is inspired by the customers I have meet, new materials I fall in love with and experiences when traveling.
Every piece is handcrafted in Dallas, TX, with the intention to be able to live across seasons and generations. Life is better together so we encourage layering and pairing these dainty pieces to create your own look! Currently we sell to over 100 boutiques across the country and pop-up shops all over the DFW area! You can check out our store locator and events listed on the website!
Has it been a smooth road?
There’s really nothing easy about creating a brand or company, but there’s also nothing more exciting! My current biggest challenge is learning to scale a company. I have struggled with keeping so much of my business processes in my head, that hiring people and letting them take over specific areas of the business has been a difficult concept for me to grasp.
Luckily having an office at a co-working space (WeWork) has allowed me to be surrounded with some of the most intelligent and inspiring business leaders I have ever met! A friend once told me the goal is for my employees to be better that their job than I would be, leading is all about delegation!
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Our biggest point of differentiation is that we hand make every piece in our office. This allows us to keep our jewelry handcrafted in the USA, allows us to cut down on delivery lead time, as well as respond to jewelry trends quickly.
We also keep our jewelry simple, modern and dainty- that’s what our customers love most! We sell at pop-up shops every weekend to be able to talk to customers, identify trends and respond immediately to requests.
Overall, I am most proud of turning my side hustle/craft projects into a profitable company.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Absolutely- the Dallas entrepreneurial community is a huge piece of why I am still in Dallas. I have made some of the most meaningful friends, employees and connections through my business- and it’s only been 2 years!
