Meet BUSH

Today we’d like to introduce you to BUSH.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I’ve always had a special ear for music. I didn’t know it when I was younger, but many of my family members are musically inclined, so listening to music has always been a different experience for me. I can distinctly remember listening to “California Love” when I was younger and I would make up remixes in my head or even hum it in different cadences. I guess my mom started to pick up on my interest in music because eventually she bought me a keyboard from a hustler on our block. For years, I would mimic the music I heard in church or on the radio- playing it all by ear. As a kid, many of my musical influences came from my mom and dad’s catalogue, which consisted a lot of Dr. Dre, The Debarge family, E40, and other locals. I am originally from California, so many of my influences also heavily came from the West Coast. When we moved from California to North Carolina I started to listen to music a little differently. It was actually sort of a culture shock because the groove in the East Coast is just culturally different from the West. And from there, I began to really indulge myself in sound design.

Please tell us about your art.
I am a Music Producer & Audio Engineer. For me, that consists a lot of song writing, the creation of reference tracks, foley effects and instrumentals. I am basically into anything that deals with sound design. When I am creating, my goal is always to provoke an emotional response, which means my sound carries a lot of my own personality behind it. I still love music from the 80s and 90s love era, so I generally try to give my listeners that kind of vibe mixed with present and futuristic elements. I always want the listener to have an amazing experience; I want them to feel like they are in another time zone.

The process of creating new sounds can actually be very simple, but it also requires many technical skills. When I am working with or teaching others, I like to keep the environment upbeat; this helps me and the people around me function at our highest capacities. With that being said if you’re ever in a session with me don’t be afraid to be you!

Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
I would suggest finding ways for yourself to make money. If that means volunteering so that you get to know the people in the industry, do that! If you don’t have money to go to that concert you really wanted to go to, contact whoever is running the show and ask how you can volunteer or help. Sometimes you can actually introduce yourself to a paid gig. One of my greatest supporters, Jada Davis (owner of Unjaded Forever LLC), helped me understand the importance of that. She was so right, because this has always funneled new opportunities for me to get clients because there will always be people out there that have specific needs that you can meet. So, put yourself in position to meet those people. If they don’t know who you are, how can they buy from you? You NEED to make sure you are visible to your targeted market. Look for any opportunity to learn, people love to see passion in your eyes.

Take whatever money you do have, and use that to promote yourself, but make sure the content you put out is quality and well thought out. This will let people know who you are and what you do. Don’t be afraid to invest in anything pertaining to your purpose, the money will follow if you are consistent. Trust your path and focus on it and only it. Create a plan, stick to it and stay focused. You’ve got to be ready when an opportunity presents itself.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
You can catch me on Instagram, Snapchat and SoundBetter. That’s where I show my followers a glimpse of what I may be accomplishing at the moment. I try to stay active daily and open opportunities where possible to other artists and entrepreneurs alike.
