Meet Megan Kranz of MTK Design Group in Grand Prairie

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Kranz.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Megan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
From childhood, I always knew I wanted to work with interior design. Exploring creativity was my passion and interiors became my strongest talent. Soon out of college with a degree in Home Furnishings & Merchandising and a minor in Business, I joined a design firm with over 300 franchises worldwide. Within 2 years I was named #1 Decorator in the company, doubling, and tripling my sales each year. I then took a year to work on my remodeling and construction knowledge before opening up my own company, while also diligently working nights to learn one of the top 3D CAD programs available and provide design services to clients around the nation. In 2016, I was accepted as an associate practitioner member of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), the largest and leading professional organization for interior design. With support of industry partners, colleagues and friends, my new business took off from the start and grows continuously each day. Within my first year, I have been fortunate to be featured in magazines, grown a support staff and was even able to travel to Los Angeles, California for a fun, music producer’s home project.

I believe that where you do life should reflect who you are and function for your lifestyle. Over the years, I have found that creating spaces that express my clients’ personality while meeting their needs not only brings excitement to the whole family but also promotes a happier day-to-day life which in turn is an inspiration to me and my business.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a business has been on my eager mind since I graduated college and when I was initially ready to finally start the process, I was newly married and my husband and I ran into health and various financial setbacks that were out of our control and abruptly halted me from pursuing the business. Looking back, I know that it was all signs pointing to me needing that time to slow down, find new perspectives and truly prepare myself for what it meant to run a company. Once I began, of course everything was brand new to me so it felt like every day was a new obstacle but my faith, and my amazingly supportive husband pushed me through each day and continue to keep my eyes looking upward and outward. In hind sight, I’ve been blessed with abundant opportunities and am so thankful for the learning experiences along the way that I believe help me continually become a better business owner and designer.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about MTK Design Group – what should we know?
My company is called MTK Design Group and I provide interior decorating solutions from floor to ceiling in the comfort of home with no design fees. My goal has been to streamline the process of working with a designer in order to help homeowners with their interior needs from start to finish in an efficient and stress-free way. I do this by using industry connections to provide home furnishings at MSRP (manufacturer’s suggested retail price), allow the wholesale profit to cover the designing, project management, delivery and installation and avoid having to charge hourly for all of the services. It’s a win-win experience because the client can rest assure knowing they made the right choices for their home alongside an expert and won’t have to break their wallets on furnishings + design fees — and in turn we get to do what we love without the client stressing about design hours and extra costs.

To make it even more efficient, we work out of a design-studio van (rather large, but I brag that I drive it very well) that we’ve outfitted with samples so that we can complete the design work on-site where the homeowner can really be involved. It’s a very interactive process where we can best visualize the end result in the home’s lighting and with the homeowner’s existing things. With feedback from the client along the way, the project ends up truly reflecting the family’s personality and we have so much fun during those appointments working together to build out their dream spaces.

I specialize in all things decorating and over the years would say I’ve focused a lot on perfecting the art of window treatments. Every window is different and finding the right solution is a math meets design project which is totally my forte. One of the most common compliments I hear from clients has been my ability to visualize and put into motion what they want, which I believe has to be instinctive and come naturally if you are meant to be a designer. That ability on top of actively listening to the client’s needs to find the best end result is what I believe sets me apart. You can find pretty stuff anywhere but working with someone who really cares about your space and exceptional design is such a more fun experience and valuable because you’ll love your spaces for a long time.

As a company, I would say I’m most proud of the people we’ve helped. Seeing a client get emotional after revealing their new space never gets old and always reminds me that what we’re doing is so special. Your day-to-day life improves when you love the atmosphere you’re in. The family’s mood changes, you finally feel at home and your mind rests when surrounded by things that you love and that reflect who you are.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
To me, it comes down to confidence and faith. I am a true believer that God gives us specific gifts and talents so that in our work we can ultimately bring glory to Him. Leaning on His strength and knowing that He is in control is the only reason I can be joyously successful. Secondly, on top of naturally having the ability to visualize design, confidence in myself to do great as well as displaying confidence to the homeowner is what enables them to entrust me with their projects.
