Meet Trailblazer Tish Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tish Johnson.

Tish, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Makeup started out as a hobby for me. My sorority sisters and I had to have our makeup done when we performed in step shows, and I became the “eyebrow” girl, lol. It’s so funny because looking back on pictures, everyone’s eyebrows literally looked like I had carved them out with a highlighter. It was so terrible! But it was the thing back then… or so we thought.

Now, fast forward to twelve years later and I’m still in the business. I’ve applied makeup to more brides than I can count and absolutely love playing a role in helping women bring out their inner DIVA! I’m no longer JUST a makeup artist. I’m now a makeup and beauty educator. I’ve conducted numerous classes teaching women how to apply their own makeup and how to tap into a side of themselves to bring out their inner Goddess.

I’ve recently expanded my brand to include exclusive women’s fashion! Makeup and fashion kind of go hand-in-hand, so what better way to help uplift women than to provide them with exclusive fashion to compliment their beautiful makeup?! I’m just a lil’ ol’ Dallas girl with a big dream! To make women look and feel like the queens they are.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There is no “easy” road in the beauty and fashion industry. Fashion and makeup trends change daily and as a makeup artist and boutique owner, I have to keep up with the trends while also maintaining my own unique style and individuality. I keep up with the trends but I don’t allow them to dictate how I run my business. Classic beauty will always trump trends.

My advice to women looking to get into the beauty and fashion industry would be to make connections and practice! If you want to learn how to create a killer brow practice girl! Grab your closest girlfriends and have an eyebrow practice party. Fear consumed me at the beginning of my career. I wouldn’t ever introduce myself to anyone from fear of rejection. Now! I introduce myself with a business card in hand because there may be other makeup artists and boutique owners out there, but none of them are Tish Johnson, and I’m freaking amazing!

We’d love to hear more about Flawless by Tish.
I am a Makeup Artist and Online Clothing Boutique Owner. I specialize in flawless makeup applications and fashion options for the busy, on-the-go woman who desires to be chic, comfy and fierce while on the move.

As a brand, I am most proud of how many women’s hearts I have touched. From working with women with Alopecia to working with cancer survivors, I have had the opportunity to be in the presence of numerous extraordinary women and listening to them express how beautiful they felt after leaving my makeup chair has truly been one of my greatest achievements.

Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
When looking for someone to guide you through the business, get to know that perspective mentor. Make sure they are actually someone you would want to model your services after… and then ask them if they are willing to mentor you. Just do it! Don’t be afraid. They will most likely be flattered and accept your request.
