Today we’d like to introduce you to Chanese Jones.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Growing up in Minneapolis, MN music has always been a part of my life. I recall hearing the sounds of The Isley Brothers, Luther Vandross, Anita Baker, Sade and Mary J. Blige playing around the house when I was little. I come from a family of hard workers, artists, singers, musicians, writers, dancers and photographers. As a teenager I moved to Dallas, TX. During this time, it was challenging to come into a foreign place and have the support and stability that I had once known before.
After moving to Dallas my passion for music moved from a place of expression to a place of solace. I’ve always been a person to get excited when new music releases. There’s nothing like stretching across the bed or couch to listen and read all the credits! I’m fascinated by those who produce, arrange and write the music that we feel such a deep connection with. It wasn’t until attending Dallas Baptist University that I was a part of a group AVP that would change the course of my life. From the relationships formed by that group, I’ve had the honor and privilege to tour with Ethan Kent singing background and sharing the stage with amazing artists who I never dreamed I’d meet.
I am so grateful for Kirk Thurmond and The Millennials as I’ve had the opportunity to learn, write and sing with such a talented and gifted band. After years of helping, being patient and learning from great minds, on July 22nd, 2018 I had my first solo artist show case. I’ve gone through many things and I can truly say, music saved my life.
Please tell us about your art.
I am a singer/songwriter. I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember and writing poetry and songs since I was nine years old. Singing use to be reserved mainly for myself, I was so shy and I didn’t want to be in the front. I just wanted to sing and help. Since I began taking music more seriously, singing isn’t intended for my own happiness and healing. I sing and write with the intention to encourage; inspire and express the lessons I’ve learned so far along my journey. One thing I’ve learned is that, life is change and everyone’s life is different. Many people have strong support systems yet there are so many people who do not. We never know who is in the audience, working at the show or listening to a song and as an artist we have the chance to be that person’s solace through our words or music. We have the chance to make someone’s special day that much brighter.
Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
One thing I will advise is, “it’s choice not chance that determines your destiny.” It’s okay to have a full time or a part time job while you pursue your passion until your passion can sustain your lifestyle. We all have different needs and responsibilities. The journey can be challenging and it’s easy to feel conflicted or discouraged but remember why you do what you do. Somewhere someone needs and appreciates what you have to offer. There are times where rehearsals may run until 2 am and you have to be up by 5:30am but it’s worth it. The moment we invest beyond what comes naturally the right opportunities presented themselves. Remain focused. You can do it!
