Meet Morgan Marlin in Allen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan Marlin.

Morgan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Honestly, hair artistry just kind of fell into my lap. I’ve always had a love for the beauty and fashion industry but I never knew how that would translate into a career. I graduated high school, I had no idea what my next step was, and one evening my friend asked if I would go to an open house event at Paul Mitchell the School Dallas (PMTSD) with her because she didn’t want to go alone. I was immediately enthralled. I knew I had stumbled into the right place. Every event and every extracurricular activity I could participate in, I did. Every spare hour I had, I spent learning as much as I could learn. I completed a twelve month program in nine and a half months because I couldn’t get enough. Over the next five years, I spent time at a few different salons. I had plenty of ups and downs, plenty of “I can’t do this” moments, and plenty of “man, I love my job” moments. All of these moments building me, shaping me, and leading me to find my own way at Skylight Salon. Six and a half years from the very start, even though all the rain and shine, I’m even more in love with this industry than I was my first day at PMTSD.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
This has most certainly not been an easy road to travel and I’m sure, as I continue on my career and my growth, I’ll hit some more bumps along the way. That’s just life. The beauty industry is definitely not for everyone. I’ve had to toughen up, grow thicker skin and learn to always pick myself back up and move right along. There are a lot of people in this industry that are just focused on themselves and they don’t care who they step on to find their success. I, personally, don’t think it works that way. Besides, where’s the fun in being at the “top” if you don’t have people to share it with?! As long as you can stay positive and focus on the art, you’ll find where you’re supposed to be. For me, that place is Skylight Salon. I work with a group of people that are strong, independent, caring, and genuine artists that inspire me every day and I’m so lucky to have found this space.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Morgan Marlin story. Tell us more about the business.
I am an independent hair stylist at Skylight Salon in Allen, so that means I run my own business and have total control of my work and my schedule but I have two beautiful and wonderful women that own the space I work out of. It’s all the perks of being self-employed with all the perks of working with a supportive team. Total win/win situation. I am a control freak and must be in charge of all aspects of my client’s hair so I do both color and cut. I love doing all sorts of hair, but I guess what most people would say I’m “known” for would be radiant redheads, ultra-icy blondes, and fabulous fantasy color. I think what sets me apart from other people in the industry is my ability to really understand my clients and make them feel like they are just hanging out with a friend. I genuinely love getting to know everyone that sits in my chair, who they are, why they are here to see me, and what it really is they need from this appointment. Obviously, besides leaving with gorgeous hair, I think a lot of women view going to the salon as a therapeutic experience and I try my very best to make sure all of my clients understand and acknowledge their inner beauty and see that reflected in their outer beauty. My goal is just to make the world a better, more beautiful, more loving place in any way that I can.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
50% luck and 50% work. I definitely believe in luck or fate or destiny. Whatever you want to call it. I absolutely think it led me to a lot of what I have in my life and my career. I also think that a lot of it was hard work, determination, and being okay with the possibility of failure, as cliché as that sounds. I believe that the universe puts things/people/opportunities in front of us but it’s up to us to decide what we do with it.
