Today we’d like to introduce you to Charity Young and Laneshia Fentress.
Charity and Laneshia, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Our band started as a group of musicians who wanted to provide a worship event to help raise money for a friend & founder of a local anti-sex trafficking ministry. I am (Charity) currently in school, so I asked a few friends from school as well as a couple of my friends (whom I consider family) Laneshia & Darius Fentress to join me in playing and singing for the event and they agreed! It was held at a local coffee shop and we packed the place out! It was an amazing night of worship, fellowship and coffee…all the best things in life, right? From there, I really felt like we were supposed to continue the band, with the core members being myself, Laneshia & Darius. I don’t remember when the Lord gave me the name “Kingdom Vibes” (but it was before our first event) and after we had our night of worship, we knew it was meant to be! From there we began playing local events…worship sets and other gigs at a restaurant in Grapevine. Our fan base is steadily growing and we love getting to do what we do. We feel our ministry is to share the musical gifts we’ve been given and love on people in the process of sharing those gifts. We are currently writing our own music and look forward to seeing what comes out of it!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We’re such a young band that I can’t say we’ve necessarily experienced many struggles along the way…but I will say we have realized that it isn’t easy to find restaurants& venues in the mid-cities area that feature bands like ourselves. Our sound is r&b and bluesy, and we’re not a gimmicky type of band…which rules us out for many venues. We are a group of musicians (Darius, our drummer is a Grammy award winner) that love to play and sing music, and that’s it. We’re not at all about the gimmicky show or pretending to be something we’re not. We’re about good music. We’ve recently established a Facebook page called the Mid-Cities Music Movement to try to get local venues and artists connected in hopes that more music is played in our area!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Kingdom Vibes – what should we know?
As believers in Christ, our first and foremost focus is people. We believe we achieve that focus of ministry through our musical expression. By expressing our gifts and encouraging people to come out to our shows or events, we have the privilege of sharing our hearts and our faith through music; not necessarily always playing Christian music but by how we interact with people and how we love on them. We truly care about people and I believe that is expressed in our relationships and our music. It’s not uncommon for people to come up to us after we’ve finished a set of r&b and pop and blues music, and the comments are, “there is something uniquely different about your band!” We smile and say “thank you” but we know what they’re saying…even if they don’t! We are a multi-ethnic band, so not only is our sound unique, but so is every person in our band. And we LOVE that about us!
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
For us, success means someone walks away from hearing us play and feeling like they’ve had an encounter with God. Whether it’s through a personal encounter with Him, a conversation with one of us, an opportunity to encourage someone or just making them have a good time while they’re with us!
