Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacky Alberto.
Jacky, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My journey began 5 years ago, I started as a shampoo assistant. The salon was located in North Dallas; I was there for about 7 months. I wanted to gather more knowledge, so I decided to transition elsewhere. I got hired on the spot! Assistant at Studio 1514, and that’s where it all began. I didn’t assist other stylists; I actually started by fulfilling hair extension orders. Knowing the salon’s reputation, my desire was to get hired regardless of what position they gave me. Being able to get my foot inside the door was a blessing to my life. Striving to become a hairstylist, I would maximize my time. I would stay over time, give clients the attention they needed and help out my boss. Let’s not forget that I was only told to fulfill hair extension orders, talk about going the extra mile! After some time, a new position opened up. The salon owner was looking for a personal assistant; which I was given the privilege to become. She placed me under her wing and mentored me. I quickly learned everything that was needed to become a commission stylist, and I became one.
Becoming a commission stylist was no easy task, but during the first 6 months, I witnessed client growth. Grateful towards God for the process, I’d say what helped me get to where I am today was persistence. Persistence played a major key along with going the extra mile. Observing other stylists, I became a learning machine; asking a question here and there and never losing track of why I started. I wanted to become a better version of myself. In the beginning, I would work 12 hours a day. After building a strong foundation, I was able to find balance in my time.
Has it been a smooth road?
It hasn’t been easy, but I feel everything played out smoothly. I didn’t initially start off immediately behind the chair it took a process, long hours and late nights were involved. I believe that you can achieve anything by working hard and having set goals, regardless of the circumstances. If you’re a young woman pursuing the hair industry or any other industry, learning is the key to everything. Seek to learn as much as possible, in any industry you choose, strive to become a better version of yourself every day!
We’d love to hear more about Jackyohhair_.
When it comes to the hair industry, I know a bit of everything but I specialize in color. My 2 strong gifts are coloring and balayage. A wide range of my clients come to me for a lightening or balayage service. I’m proud of the relationship I have with my clients and how much they trust me with their hair and continue to come back to me. Color services take a few hours, so I get to engage with my clients at a personal level. I believe communication is important in this industry.
Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
Yes! I definitely believe finding a mentor is one of the best things you can do not just in this field but in any career of choice. My recommendation would be to not be afraid or too shy to ask questions, especially to those artists or people whose work you admire. If you’re looking to get into the beauty industry assisting is the way to go. You get first-hand experience with a professional who’s experienced and you get to see everything from behind the scenes. I’d say what worked for me was my hunger to keep learning asking questions, and not being afraid to try new things out.
