Today we’d like to introduce you to Mira Cannon.
Mira, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
As a little girl, I thought it was fun to do nice hair and pretty makeup just like any other girl. As I got older, I started to realize how much more I enjoyed doing it for other people. However, I never thought seriously about being a hair stylist. Instead, I went to college for graphic design.
Although I never thought seriously about being a hairstylist, I was already doing hair for proms and weddings even before deciding to go to cosmetology school. After college, I got married and stayed at home with my kids. One day, my husband suggested that I go to cosmetology school which I thought sounded so crazy at the time! I have to admit though that it might be one of the best decisions I have ever made.
Looking back, makes me realize how much I enjoy what I do every day. I enjoy it so much that I wonder why I didn’t start earlier.
Now, I can say I do what I love to do!
Has it been a smooth road?
Starting part-time cosmetology school and taking care of my two children was not easy. Also, so many younger people in this field made me feel like I may be – little late to the party. On the other hand, I know how hard it is to decide what you want to do in your career and life at any stage.
Each year, I work in this industry, it helps me to realize how much I’ve grown. With that, my passion as hairstylist grows as well. My biggest passion is the relationships that I get to build with my guests. They push me to be the best at what I do. These relationships help me to work through any challenges I face. I think once you find what you truly love to do, this is the most important thing.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Mira at Tress Society story. Tell us more about the business.
When my best friend, Brian Robles and I started Tress Society, we wanted to create a place for our guests to come and relax and be themselves. Just as they are. The services we offer are important but just as important is our want to individualize each guest’s experience.
We offer haircuts, specialty color, styling and extensions that are tailored to each person’s daily life or to any special occasion they find themselves attending.
What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
As I was raised by a grandmother who was involved in a lot of missionary work, I was fortunate enough to be around people who were willing to share what they have when we needed help and allow us to be able to help when others needed our hands.
Even as a little girl, I could see how connecting with one another would help each of us to better each other’s life.
My grandmother always reminded me to be humble. Regardless, if you are in the position to give to others or are in need of other’s help. The things you have are not of value if there isn’t anyone around to share in the love with.
