Maggie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I graduated college with a marketing degree in December of 2016. I was immediately offered a position working with marketing in a small business. Unfortunately, my job title was changed on my very first day!
After a mere 3 months of working 9-5, I realized it was time to go full-time running my own business. With zero plans and a shaky voice, I put in my 2 weeks’ notice. I went home, chose a name (Social Maggie), started my social media pages, created a website, and ordered business cards. I got my first client that very week.
Within a few months, I was fully booked. Over the past year and a half, I’ve been so blessed to be able to serve creatives and business owners with my Instagram services and helpful products. I’m now serving clients from NYC to California… and even internationally!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I’m a pretty big introvert. While I’m great around people when the time comes, I definitely prefer to cuddle up in bed with my laptop and to-do list. However, I quickly discovered how lonely entrepreneurship could be. When I moved halfway across the country (from SC to TX), it only got worse. The only person I knew was my husband.
From April to August, I had maybe 3 conversations with non-relatives. Because of that totally unhealthy behavior, I began to develop depression and social anxiety. On a whim, I joined a local co-working studio. I’ve also begun to force myself to attend networking events, connect with locals, and stop allowing myself to use my business as an excuse to be lonely!
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I’m a one-woman show! I run social media (primarily Instagram and Facebook) for small businesses and creatives. I work with businesses all over the world!
I’m known for my Instagram expertise. I offer one-on-one training, monthly packages, hourly growth services, and my affordable, easy-to-use products… such as lifetime access to my hashtag list of over 3,300 hashtags!
I’m most proud of my ethics. While many Instagram experts purchase followers, join pods to encourage fake engagement or buy likes, I have grown my account (and all of my clients’ accounts) by hand. I never break Instagram’s Terms of Service.
I’m also proud of my authenticity. I’m a firm believer that women in business should be honest about their struggles. Pretending to have a perfect life and business only discourages others.
I have been completely open about my health problems, battles with depression and anxiety, and even my recent miscarriage. In my opinion, no woman should feel alone in her business OR in her struggles.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I’m not a big believer in luck. I believe our choices decide our path. While I do believe I’ve had some good (and bad) times, I chalk it up to God. Looking back, even my worst days have worked together for good.
For instance, when I took a 9-5 job post-college, I was disappointed at the ethics of the small business. I was also upset that my job title had been changed on my first day of employment. However, if I hadn’t been so miserable in my first job, I never would’ve branched out on my own!
