Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Murphy (Forever Starts Today).
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Hello! We are the female-fronted power pop/punk outfit Forever Starts Today, consisting of Christina Murphy (Lead Vocals), Nathan Dunn (Guitar & Vocals), Troy Hirschhorn (Guitar) and Nicholas Turner (Drums). Christina had a solo project for a couple of years, which Nathan played guitar for. In 2015, she made the decision to switch the name from “Christina Murphy” to the full band name “Forever Starts Today”, as more of a collaborative effort.
With the band line-up forever changing before recording our first EP, it felt for a while that Forever Starts Today was cursed and would never be able to put out music. Every time we were days away from recording in the studio, we would lose an integral member of the band and recording would have to be put on hold. This went one not twice, not three times, not four times in a row, but FIVE times before the current version of “LIMITLESS” was finally released! Due to the many roadblocks, Christina, Nathan, and Troy decided to stop waiting around for things to work out with other members and recorded the whole EP, just us 3.
Our message, “Your Forever Starts Today, and the possibilities are LIMITLESS” which continues to push our theme that “no matter where you’ve come from or where you are in this moment, you can obtain any kind of future as long as you work hard and take action.” We know this because we’ve BEEN there. Kicked at the bottom. Given up on. We know first-hand that there’s Always Hope, as long as you don’t give up on the dream you want. You can also listen to the story of our struggles in the more recent song, “Skyline”. After the “LIMITLESS” era, we brought on Nick Turner on drums and recorded a full-length album called “Always Hope”, keeping in line with the positive and inspirational theme we have as a band. Both of these albums you can listen to on all major music platforms!
Please tell us about your art.
Forever Starts Today is a pop-rock band who sprinkles messages of hope, positivity, and discovery through our lyrics and our electric live shows. In 2016, we put out our debut EP “LIMITLESS”. Fast forward a year later, and we went back into the studio, this time for our debut full length, Always Hope and delightfully signed with Third String Records! The record is a feel-good masterpiece about always keeping your head up and never letting anything defeat you.
Always Hope explores some of the tougher things in life (like losing a loved one, surviving abuse and finally cutting ties in a toxic relationship) but they all tie around in a positive way. We feel that the world has enough negativity in it; we want to spread some of the positive stuff! If you listen to our new record, you will hear that we draw inspiration from everyday life. We tackle a wide range of topics on Always Hope, but it can really be summed up by saying ‘this is what it means to go through life in your 20’s, in today’s world.’ We didn’t shy away from any of the more intense topics either. The main goal is to connect with people through music, by delivering a sense of hope and positivity by opening up about some tough situations brings a sense of rawness to the lyrics and sound. We hope that in doing so, we can help provide some listeners with a sense of sympathy or empathy and the feeling that they aren’t alone in whatever they are experiencing.
We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
Absolutely. No matter what medium of art you’re interested in, you’re definitely not alone. Find the next closest venue that plays your type of music or art exhibit that showcases your style of art or Open Mic Nights that host karaoke nights, comedy sketches, etc. and go there! Step outside of your comfort zone and introduce yourself to as many people as possible. Know people and make friends in your artist niche! The more people you meet, the more connections you’ll be able to make.
Not only is reaching out to strangers going to further you by making connections, but also be willing to go the extra mile to help someone else as well. This will really show others how invested you are in their work and will hopefully encourage them to support you in yours as well! Look for the places that your style of art is, go there, be active in the community and meet as many people as you can. This is the best way to connect with other artists and take the next step with your own artwork!
