Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Rodriguez.
Jessica, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Ever since I was a little girl, I had always been interested in art and design. I was never “bored” I always found myself coloring, drawing, reading to pass time. I have always been inspired by fashion, nature, and travel.
Although Texas is my home state, I also had the pleasure of living and attending school in Puerto Rico when I was younger. While I was in school, there was an art competition to design Christmas cards for the mayor distribute to the whole city. I won the competition and little did I know that later in life I would start designing cards of my own!
I officially started selling cards in 2016 at a work event for fun! Since 2016 I have created over 40 unique designs and counting of various things that inspire me. I have had the opportunity to attend events in partnership with The Boho Market, Grit by Brit Fitness and Makers Mall DFW.
My work has also been featured on blogs such as The Skinny Confidential and The Wonder Forest.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
Creating art is very personal, and not everyone will like your designs, but when they do its very rewarding and gives you motivation to keep going. I love sharing my creations with others, and I hope it gives them the joy and happiness that it gives me when I design them. I also hope that my shop and artwork will give others inspiration to pursue their talents or hobbies without hesitation. There is room for everyone in the art world!
All designs are hand drawn by me, painted with watercolor and inked. They then get scanned to the computer and edited onto whatever medium I’m printing on, and they get printed here in my home office! Occasionally I will have a couple of my products printed by amazing printers based in the USA.
I love taking commissions and making your ideas come to life. I design greeting cards, invitations, portraits and more!
My designs are playful, feminine and sassy. I hope to grow in 2018 and will soon start to offer coffee mugs, tumblers, and a full stationery line.
Do you think conditions are generally improving for artists? What more can cities and communities do to improve conditions for artists?
I think the life of an artist can often times be tough! However, it takes dedication, passion, and consistency to really stand out from the crowd to become successful. I feel that now that social media comes to play, more artists have emerged and have been able to share their work with everyone. Every artist is different, and there’s something for everyone!
If you’re an artist just starting out, I would just use social media to my advantage and post all of your work so it can be shared and viewed!
Cities can support local artists by partnering with them through pop up events, featuring them in articles/magazines and hosting craft/art fairs to promote all the inspiring and local talent.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
