Today we’d like to introduce you to August Lewis.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was born and raised in Dallas Texas. I got started in music at Zumwalt Middle School in Oak Cliff. I stayed in the band until my freshman year of college at Texas Southern University. During that time I was introduced to music production. When back in Dallas I became part of a local record label (Grifter Records) and a guy name DJ Big Tex showed me how to DJ. Since then I’ve done several mixtapes here and there as well as parties. Three years ago I got my first residency at Buzzbrews Kitchen in Deep Ellum where I currently DJ on Friday and Saturday nights.
Please tell us about your art.
I DJ. I have a deep love for music, and I love sharing that love with individuals. I have a unique situation, I DJ at a 24-hour restaurant from 11pm-4am. Crazy right. The inspiration behind it was giving bar hoppers and club goers a place to eat and sober up without dampening the mood for the night.
What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
I think artists of all kind are in a great position today because of the ownership the internet and social media provides. As well as the direct to fan leverage. The city definitely needs more venues willing to accommodate small shows and are artist friendly.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
