Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Olivares.
Taylor, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Very early on, I had a passion for anything & everything beauty related. When I was four years old, I would sneak into my mother’s purse and grab her red lipstick and lock myself in the bathroom for an hour to do my hair and makeup. At the time I felt like I could take over the world with the right shade of lipstick.
About three years ago, I suffered a personal tragedy and felt like I had lost myself. Rather than dwell in my own issues, I decided to begin a pursuit of happiness. I remembered the feeling I had at four years old, feeling like I could take over the world, so I began my pursuit by waking up and doing my hair and makeup because when you look good, you feel good… right?
Every day I would try a new look, and everyday my skills got better and better until eventually my close friends and family began asking for beauty tips and for me to do their hair and makeup. At first, I thought I was just helping them feel as good as I did but then I quickly discovered how much I loved making others feel beautiful. Makeup became my passion, so I decided to begin taking courses and even working under another makeup artist that I admired.
In 2017, I began to focus more on bridal hair and makeup, however, it was very difficult to get noticed in such a competitive market. I decided I needed to do something to help me stand out, so I began hosting “styled shoots” and invited multiple photographers to attend in order to capture the best possible photos of my work.
In hosting the styled shoots, I learned I not only have a passion for hair and makeup, but I also have a passion for wardrobe styling, decorating, hosting and event planning. I love being a part of the behind the scenes of what goes into capturing the “perfect image” as well as making women feel their absolute best. I have met so many wonderful people through my love of makeup, and it has been such a blessing.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
In the beginning, it was very scary, and I invested a lot of money into my brand. I did not take out a loan to start my business; this was something I funded little by little with my own money. When I first started I only had 12 makeup brushes, and I had to make them work no matter what but with every dime earned I would add to my kit little by little.
Investing in yourself not knowing if it will pay off is a risky move, and I spent many nights contemplating if I was doing the right thing, but I knew if I didn’t at least try I would regret it later in life. I believed in myself, and I knew if I worked hard it would all eventually pay off. Early on, I took many jobs where I was being underpaid and unappreciated, but I do not regret any of it because it has turned me into the businesswoman and artist that I am today.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Taylor Glam story. Tell us more about the business.
Taylor Glam has become known for creative styled wedding shoots and bridal hair and makeup. I believe what sets me apart from other makeup artist is the relationship that I have with many photographers from all over the USA that travel to Texas to attend my photoshoots.
I am the most proud of the amount of referrals I receive without ever advertising on the major wedding websites, 100% of my referrals are from word of mouth by prior customers or photographers that have attended my styled shoots.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I do not believe in luck, I believe people either follow their passion or ignore it. Life is way too short, I decided to do what makes my heart sing which is leaving everyone and everything a little more beautiful than when I found them.
