Mehran Assadi shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Mehran, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
A common misperception is that life insurance is about dying versus about living. Life insurance can support you during different life events, like retirement, sending a child to college, or living with an unexpected illness. National Life recently introduced two different life insurance riders: one to help clients diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or Lewy Body Dementia and a Fertility Journey Rider to help those who want to expand their families. This is the type of innovation many people don’t expect from a life insurance company.
With life and annuity products, we provide self-independence rather than dependence on government or social programs. We help build financial confidence. It’s a new kind of insurance.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
National Life is a 177-year old startup which focuses on service. We protect our customers’ futures through life insurance and annuity products. Our vision is “To bring peace of mind to everyone we touch.” Our mission is “Keeping our promises.” Our values are “Do good. Be good. Make good.” This is what guides our work every day.
Our brand is deeply rooted in our culture which all about service and leading with a servant’s heart.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
What breaks the bond is lack of trust. Trust can be eroded over time or broken in an instant. It takes hard work to restore that trust.
Our business is built on trust and meaningful connections. I travel over 76,000 air miles every year, meeting with the agents who offer our products so they see firsthand how passionate I am about our business and our company. My teammates and I want to make sure everyone we do business with trusts that National Life will be here to provide them with peace of mind, just like we have been through wars, global pandemics, and even when the Titanic sunk.
What’s something you changed your mind about after failing hard?
I used to think failing was a problem but now I know it’s a missed opportunity. You can learn from when you fail. We all make mistakes but it’s what we do with what we learned from making that mistake that matters.
My father used to say “The learning process ends the day you die.” I agree with that. Learning and thinking differently is what is making National Life one of the fastest growing life insurance companies in the U.S.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
The cultural value I protect is that of service and responding to a higher calling. I believe we have been put on this earth to serve one another, to lend a hand and contribute the gifts with which we were born. This applies to everyone: your family and friends, your neighbors, your coworkers and your customers.
My parents instilled core values in me and my siblings. One that resonates with me deeply is “Respect All.” Even if I disagree with someone’s point of view, we can have a respectful conversation.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
The agents who offer our products would miss my passion for the profession. This is an honorable and noble profession. We are in the business of protecting the futures of not only our customers, but our agents, employees, and communities as well. I deeply believe in the solutions we provide and the service we offer. I am obsessed with service and our industry.
