Today we’d like to introduce you to Toni Martin.
Toni, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
Many of the artists’ works are assembled through bridging an innate connection to music, where her fingers are the instrument, and the paint serves as musical notes. By (creating this way) she has created a visual representation of the universal bond between people through music, shapes, sounds, and colors. The artistic impulses during Toni’s private creative process may seem random but stem from lucid dreams or deep feeling. Which often impact viewers with their intense Chroma and playful accents.
Over the past ten years, I have come a long way on my own personal journey through art with almost no formal training. I have found that art allows me to express myself and at the same time save or help others around me. From sleeping on couches to government housing on a floor, I have managed to create a career, a following and have developed relations with supportive patrons who believe in me.
It is highly frustrating when I realize that my brain is lacking the necessary verbal tools needed to convey to other people what it is I am thinking. Sometimes the only way I can communicate is through paint, shapes, and form. I feel I am trapped in my mind and have developed a sign language through art to express myself and feel a connection. I create works of art by using expressive gestures through fluid movement and precise pigment placement, which helps communicate my own emotional vulnerabilities. My vulnerability on many planes allows me to create a sense of empathy shared with the audience. Through immersing myself in a state of flow my sense of shapes, colors and balance develop into an abstract unspoken language, ultimately allowing viewers to go on an emotional journey.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
Toni Martin (°1988, Monterey, United States) makes paintings and mixed media artworks. By using expressive gestures through fluid movement and precise pigment placement, Toni uncovers her emotional vulnerabilities in her works of art. The artist Toni Martin has a unique way of portraying her empathy for others with an abstract unspoken language of color and form, which take viewers on an emotional journey.
Her paintings don’t reference recognizable form. By applying abstraction, she brings to life intense personal moments masterfully created by means of rules and omissions, acceptance and refusal. Ultimately her process creates deeper complexities in the art through manipulating the medium to its fullest extent.

Her works feature coincidental, accidental and unexpected transition which Toni hopes fascinates and creates beauty in chaos. Combining unrelated aspects lead to surprising analogies. Toni Martin, from Maryland, now currently lives and works in Dallas.
What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
I do not define success by how much you sell or make a living from… I base success on self-discovery and sacrifice for something you love and how you propel your energy towards creation in your interactions with the world around you. I think knowing that all you have to do is “do” and ultimately something happens… Allowing yourself no excuses and letting go of fear is key for success with yourself and art… Because to me, art is your soul breathing.
