Community Highlights: Meet Jean Petrik De Lima of Alliance Jiu Jitsu Fort Worth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jean Petrik De Lima

Hi Jean, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Born in the vibrant city of Curitiba, Brazil, Petrik’s journey into the world of martial arts began in his childhood, a passion ignited at the tender age of nine. It was then that he first immersed himself in the captivating art of Capoeira, the Afro-Brazilian martial art that blends fighting, dance, and music. This early introduction instilled in him not just physical skills, but also a deep appreciation for discipline, rhythm, and the interconnectedness of mind and body.

This foundation in Capoeira served as a springboard for further exploration. At 19, Petrik transitioned to the ground-focused discipline of Jiu-Jitsu. He dedicated himself to rigorous training for a year and a half, honing his skills and developing the mental fortitude necessary to compete. This dedication paid off, paving the way for his entry into the challenging arena of mixed martial arts competitions.

A pivotal moment arrived when a friend invited him to coach classes at a gym in Keller, Texas. He fell in love with the area and recognized the potential to share his passion and expertise with the community.

With over 16 years of teaching experience under his belt, Petrik has become a respected figure in the martial arts community. His coaching prowess has touched the lives of fighters competing in prestigious organizations such as the UFC, Professional Fighters League, Bellator, and M-1 Global. As a third-degree Jiu-Jitsu black belt, he embodies the dedication and mastery he instills in his students.

For Petrik, teaching is more than just a profession; it’s a genuine passion. His primary goal extends beyond the confines of the gym mats. He strives to make a lasting difference in the lives of his students, equipping them with tools they can use far beyond the dojo. “Everyone who steps on our mats leaves with something they can use outside of our gym, at home, school, or at work,” Petrik explains. He believes that through martial arts training, students experience a profound improvement in their attitude and mindset, empowering them to navigate life’s challenges with greater confidence and resilience. His journey, from the streets of Curitiba to the heart of Texas, is a testament to the transformative power of martial arts and the dedication of a man committed to sharing its gifts with the world.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There were a few struggles along the way, when Covid hit, Jean couldn’t bring his wife and son who were still living in Brazil, as well as visit them. It took almost two years to reunite with them.
That didn’t stop him to pursue his passion and drive to open his own gym and improve his knowledge in the language and American culture.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
the COVID-19 crisis has been a crucible, forging valuable lessons that have reshaped my perspective. It reinforced the vital importance of resilience, the ability to bounce back from adversity, and patience, understanding that progress isn’t always linear. The pandemic highlighted the significance of pursuing goals, and not just immediate gratification, emphasizing the power of long-term vision.
It also underscored the necessity of sacrifice, sometimes putting aside personal desires for the greater good. Perhaps most importantly, the crisis taught me the critical skill of adaptability, learning to navigate situations beyond my control. Maintaining a positive attitude, even when motivation waned, proved crucial, and I learned to lean on discipline and focus to stay grounded and productive. These experiences have not only helped me weather the storm but have also equipped me with invaluable tools for navigating future challenges.
