Community Highlights: Meet Stormy Cansler of Hidden Hangar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stormy Cansler.

Hi Stormy, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
We started as a vineyard, which my mother planted the in the 1990s to help Grayson College with their Enology program. We are now the largest in North Texas. Some of first planting are still producing to this day. Over the years we added varieties at the request of Wineries with whom we had been working. We decided to bring our first vintage to market for Hidden Hangar with the 2018 vintage when we opened our tasting room in December 2019. Some of those wines are still available.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Mother Nature likes to throw farmers curveballs. We have had to dodge our fair share of them. Whether it is the freeze in 2021 drastically reducing crop yields even before bud-break or this year’s drought reducing grape size and therefore yield. Additional hurdles have been and not limited to opening the tasting room one month before the pandemic, labor shortages, and a supply chain kerfuffle or two.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Hidden Hangar Vineyard and Winery was once home to barnstorming planes. Today the vineyard occupies the land that pilots used as their runway to the sky. Hidden Hangar honors our past with an award-winning wine label that reflects airplanes of a bygone era and the vineyards from which we create Hidden Hangar 100% Estate wines. Hidden Hangar grows Vitis Vinifera grapes from varietals originally grown in France: Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Petite Verdot, Riesling, and Syrah. Hidden Hangar is known for award-winning Estate wines. We are the only grower in North Texas Wine Country that grows 100% of all our own wine grapes and the only grapes that we use to make our award-winning wines. People visit us to escape from the hustle of city life and enjoy premier wines. We offer indoor and outdoor seating with covered patios and a lawn that allows quiet enjoyment of vineyard views. Hidden Hangar has wine tastings, wine pairings, wine dinners, weddings, private parties, wine blending parties, winery tours, Sunday brunch, and tours of our Estate vineyards.
